Yankees-Red Sox a 2013 dud

08:15 AM ET 04.01 | For all but two teams, the 2013 season has arrived. So here we have it, the marquee Opening Day baseball matchup: Yankees versus Red Sox, classic contrast to Mets-Padres opening up at the same time on the other side of the Triborough Bridge. Or is it? Maybe any other year, but not this one. Not in a year after the Red Sox finished in last place with 93 losses, and the Yankees, when last seen, were being booed out of the Bronx. ... And definitely not in a year when the two signature players and remaining symbols of the great Yankee-Red Sox rivalry over the last 15 years -- Derek Jeter and Big Papi David Ortiz -- are both somewhere in Florida rehabbing aching ankles and pondering their futures.

The entire division should be interesting. I don't think the Sox have done enough to improve by 25 games (which is what they'd need if they want to make the playoffs). Tampa Bay seems to be the safest choice to win the division (Toronto a close second). Given that the AL West teams play Houston 18 times each, it's likely that at least one (and possibly two) of the wild card teams will come from there....looking forward to September!!!

What exactly did they do to improve by 25 games?

I believe he said they did NOT do enough to improve by 25 games.

Getting rid of Bobby Valentine should be at least a 20 game improvement. Throw in the fact that the rest of the division, other that the Jays took a step back as well, Boston has as much of a chance as winning that division as anybody with solid years from Lester and Buchholz.

Fandom has moved on from the rivalry/Fever pitch narrative that MLB/ESPN/FOX has been peddling for years. By having the Sox/Yanks face off against each other on opening day, MLB guarantees that at least one of them will spend some time in first place. Still, no playoffs for either team this year.
