Scathing scouting report on Smith

08:05 AM ET 04.02 | On the upside, Geno Smith was judged to have a very strong arm, "good overall accuracy" plus "escapability" and outstanding straight-line speed, but the list of negatives came up long. "[Was] often out of sync with receivers. Average field vision and coverage recognition -- forces throws and does not work through progressions. ... Not a student of the game. Nonchalant field presence -- does not command respect from teammates and cannot inspire. Mild practice demeanor -- no urgency. Not committed or focused -- marginal work ethic. Interviewed poorly at the Combine and did not show an understanding of concepts on the white board. Opted not to compete at the Senior Bowl and has approached offseason training as if he has already arrived."

As 50 has been saying for weeks...

Watch the game tapes.

Will he join the ranks of Jeff George, Vinny Testaverde, etc, etc ,etc? Or will he be a Tom Brady?

April 2, 2013  08:35 AM ET

Sounds like JaMarcus Russell part II to me. The Raiders drafting him 3rd overall would be comedy gold.

more like Vince Young...he has all the physical abilities, but he has to be willing to sharpen the mental aspects of his game.

Perfect fit for the Raiders!

I'll approach this from the other side . . . . . . maybe you have a scout trying to throw everyone else off the trail. Hype up a bunch of negatives with the hopes people buy in to it. Less is more, in this case. The less someone else looks at a prospect, the more chances I get to grab him.

The latest in a long string of hotshot Big 12 QBs that were mediocre (at best) on Sundays.

I agree....but I don't even think he's as good an athlete as Young...And he certainly doesn't have Jeff George's arm strength

Did somebody sign their name to this scouting report? This reminds me alot of really bad scouting report on RGIII last year that everybody loved to quote, but that nobody could attribute to a specific name.

I'd say the game tapes were inconclusive. He looked incredible at times and pretty awful whenever put up against a quality D.

I'm aware that at this time of the year these types of stories are the norm on T&R...so normally I take them with a grain of salt...but I know that if I was drafting early I would be extremely worried about this pick. He's shown incredible upside, but he's also shown an inability to adapat (and that's at the college level).

I wonder where we would be rating Smith if he was in last year's draft.

The Kansas City Chiefs are on the clock. There is nooobody you would trade up to get the first pick in this draft. Andy can have Geno over for a sleep over and it still will not change a thing.

I agree...but a lot of these guys looked bad when they were up against "quality" .
I'll tell you what, T'eo may be the most overrated LB I've seen in a long time.

Yes it does. Perhaps this time teams will be smart enough to let a guy like this free fall to the third round.
