01:22 PM ET 04.02 | The split between Ed Reed and the team that drafted him was one that the Baltimore Ravens appeared to resist by entering a bidding war with the Houston Texans for the nine-time Pro Bowler, but that couldn't be further from the truth, according to Mike Preston of the Baltimore Sun. In fact, Preston said on Monday that Ravens head coach John Harbaugh "wanted Reed back as much as he wants a root canal." The only reason the Ravens pursued a contract with Reed, according to Preston, was out of respect to the future Hall of Famer and to help drive up his price tag with the Texans. In 11 seasons with the Ravens, Reed started in all but 17 games, making at least 10 starts in each season. He accumulated 61 interceptions, placing him 10th all-time, and returned seven for touchdowns, also placing him 10th all-time. He is the all-time leader in interception return yardage.

Harbaugh is right.

I imagine that early in the process it was clear to both parties that there was a huge crevasse between the number Reed wanted and the number the Ravens were willing to pay. Both sides probably knew it wasn't going to work out at that point. Although, the Ravens would have been willing to put up with Reed if he gave them a super discount. But Reed doesn't work like that.

I kinda doubt that the Ravens would be concerned with running up his price on Reed's behalf.

I think the Texans should have resigned Quin instead. He had a good year; still has better years ahead of him; is younger; and knows Wade's system. Reed is HOF; I just hope he has something left in the tank and remains injury free.

I love how Ed dyed his beard before heading out to Texas.

No big deal here but consider the following: 1. I have yet to see a quote from Harbaugh or anybody else connected with the Ravens hinting at they did not want him back. 2. This headline is pure sensationalism to get page hits. Peppered with speculation and opinion with a sprinkling of facts, like most reporting these days (call a reporter on that and all of sudden they claim not to be reporters but "bloggers"). Facts don't sell website ads, sensationalism and headlines get the page hits. 3. Reed gets $15M for 3 years from Texans with $6M guaranteed (questionable move by Texans GM). Reed will be 35 next season and can't/won't tackle due to persistent shoulder injury. Ravens replace Reed with 30 year old safety Michael Huff for 3 years $6M.

Mike Preston from Baltimore Sun is the original writer is just trying so hard every time to be relevant to the national media.
