49ers trade for McCoy

01:59 PM ET 04.02 | The San Francisco 49ers acquired Colt McCoy from the Cleveland Browns on Monday. Cleveland will receive a fifth and seventh-round pick for McCoy and Cleveland's sixth-round pick. Once the Browns' starting quarterback, McCoy fell out of favor with Cleveland's front office. McCoy started 21 games for the Browns between 2010-11, but failed to establish himself as the Browns' long-term quarterback. The Browns drafted Brandon Weeden in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft, replacing McCoy as Cleveland's starting quarterback. McCoy replaces Alex Smith for the 49ers, and offers a similar skillset for Jim Harbaugh. Like Smith, McCoy is an accurate passer, but doesn't have a big arm. During his three-year career, McCoy has completed 58.3 percent of his passes, while throwing 21 touchdowns and 20 interceptions -- good for a passer rating of 74.8.

Good pickup for the 49ers.

Can't wait till this time next year, when Kaepernick demands a raise.

April 2, 2013  02:08 PM ET

That's about right; he got the hell beat out of him in that Black and Blue and Purple division, then gets shipped off without as much as a hug.................

Kaepernick can't renegotiate his deal until after his 4th year. Thank the last CBA.

Oh man..... Play option read is in full effect, in that case.

Took it like a man too... Never complained, even when his father stood up for him.

Damn, now I have to get a new Browns jersey.

He handled a very bad situation with a lot of class. He's no threat to bench Kap, but he might surprise some teams if he gets a chance to play with an actual NFL caliber offensive line and some weapons to work with. He was just getting pounded playing in Cleveland.

Unfortunate for the 49ers.... in that they also get his dad in the deal.

April 2, 2013  03:56 PM ET

I hear they intentionally delayed faxing the part of the contract for the dad until after deadline.

April 2, 2013  04:07 PM ET

Matters not, the 49ers will use one of their now 12 picks on a project QB. They are sitting pretty though.

April 2, 2013  04:10 PM ET

Good pickup for the 49ers. He'll be a good backup for Kap and he should be able to win some games with the tools they already have. Having Harbaugh to coach him up can't hurt either.

As far as his Pops, I'd have spoken up too if I was his father. He was getting lambasted in Cleveland and nobody really cared.

Shipped off? My guess is he was elsewhere to begin with, and his smile when he heard the news was wider than a Kardashiass.

But did he have a smile wider than a Kardiashians during the NBA lockout?
