Beilein a descendant of 'Saving Private Ryan' family

07:54 AM ET 04.03 | Steven Spielberg's "Saving Private Ryan," released in 1998, was based on the story of the Niland family of Tonawanda, N.Y. [In 1944, Fritz Niland] was soon identified and sent home, eventually to Tonawanda. He later became an oral surgeon and lived until 1983. In 1992, author Stephen Ambrose featured the story of the Nilands in his best selling book, "Band of Brothers. ... Matt Damon played Private James Ryan, aka Fritz Niland. The movie won five Oscars. In 1953, the former Josephine Niland, sister of Tommy, cousin of Bobby, Preston, Ed and Fritz, gave birth in Western New York to the eighth of her nine children. His name is John Beilein. He is currently the men's basketball coach of the University of Michigan.

Gotta admit....this is a weird thread for this venue. It's not even Oscar week, but I guess the start of MLB just doesn't move the needle anymore in sports.

Michigan won't win the national title. That's not what Michigan does. They hint at it, sniff it, declare it, pump their chest about it etc., but when the nets get cut down it'll be someone else doing the cutting.

A word to the unwise. Anyone can be beaten by a better team, which is what happened to Duke with Louisville. But in order to laugh at another team, especially one monumentally better and more successful than the one for which you root, your team should first win something. Michigan is worse than a has been. They are a never was.
