12:53 PM ET 04.04 | JaMarcus Russell may find his way onto an NFL roster in 2013 as several teams are rumored to be interested in the quarterback according to Mike Freeman at CBS Sports. Russell hasn't played in the NFL since the Raiders cut him following the 2009 season and is considered among the biggest draft busts in NFL history. Russell was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft out of LSU, but never came close to his potential in Oakland. Over his three year career he completed 52.1% of his passes for 4,083 yards with 18 touchdowns and 23 interceptions, posting a 65.2 career passer rating. Russell was labeled lazy and ballooned to over 300 pounds before finally being released. In the years since his release no teams have shown interest in Russell until this year. He has lost over 30 pounds and has been working with Mark Sanchez and Jeff Garcia this offseason; he plans to hold a Pro Day on April 10. A number of teams have been following Russell's comeback closely and if he appears in shape, it is likely he will get an invite to training camp.

No Doubt the Rumor was started by Russell's agent

April 4, 2013  12:57 PM ET

Is "working out with Jeff Garcia" some kind of euphemism?

April 4, 2013  12:57 PM ET

He's got Mark Sanchez as his mentor...........LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL........NOW THATS FUNNY!!!!!!

Why does an NFL team need ballast?

April 4, 2013  01:23 PM ET

Probably. Three percent of the league minimum fro veteran players is better than nothing.

April 4, 2013  01:33 PM ET

Better have someone periodically check his stuff during training camp - in case that ain't Gatorade in there

April 4, 2013  01:35 PM ET

The last I'd read, Russell was rumored to be throwing to Larry Fitzgerald for his pro day. It'll be interesting to read about who actually shows up for that.

Goes to show you some teams will not leave any stone(r) uncovered.

Never judge a man on how high he climbs... Judge him on how high he bounces back once he hits the bottom.

Eloquent.

Jeff is showing him that 'fancy' footwork.

He picked a great year to try a comeback... Only mediocre talent available in free agency, and a whole bunch of backups available in the draft. I hope he does well.

That's an excellent point, actually. I'm guessing he's not the one in his camp that thought of that, though.

He is probaly BROKE

April 4, 2013  02:32 PM ET

Vince Carter making a come back and waiting for someone to call and now Russell...even the most desparate teams aren't that stupid...are they?

I don't think so. I think he truly wants to redeem himself on the football field. It will be interesting to see whether he gets that opportunity.

No doubt at all...

Teams are looking to grab read-option QB's for practice in order to prep for games against teams who use it.
