04:45 PM ET 04.04 | The Philadelphia Flyers are expected to sign goaltender Steve Mason to a contract extension by the end of the week, according to Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia on Thursday afternoon. Both general manager Paul Holmgren and Mason's representation are in agreement that Mason will sign a one-year extension that will be less than the $2.9 million cap-hit that he currently is playing under. Mason was acquired prior to the trade deadline on Wednesday afternoon. He is set to become a restricted free agent at the end of the season. However, Mason's numbers are less-than-stellar and he views his time in Philadelphia to reset his career.

Just another goalie who'll soon disappear into the Flyers black hole, never to be heard from again .... until he re-emerges with another team somewhere .... if he's lucky enough to be traded.

Just as soon as Homer learns the secret handshake.

this makes no sense.

The Jackets were kind enough to send Mason somewhere that he would have a chance to showcase himself and perhaps resurrect his fledgling career. As far as I am concerned, Mason needs to prove that he's even good enough to be a backup, because were it not for his contract, he would have found himself marginalized a long time ago.

So now the Flyers have acquired him and before he even suits up they are going to consider signing him to an extension.

I'm sorry to all the flyers fans...but your team deserves all the horrible goaltending they get. This is yet another completely puzzling goaltending decision.

Mason's numbers are less than stellar. Mason has less-than-stellar numbers. That is all.

Are they sure it's re-sign and not resign?

April 4, 2013  06:16 PM ET

Another WTF trade......didn't realize they follow the "change is as good as a rest" philosophy.

And the Flyer Merry-go-round of goalies continues to spin. Just like water going down the drain.

Just saw the highlights ( They are showing Boston / NJ here). Looks like a good one. I hope Lupul is OK.

No official word, he, Lupul, was talking on the bench afterword, but hasn't played in the 2nd.

What's the big deal? Of course it makes sense! This is an upgrade to our backup goalie situation. i don't think anyone expects him to suddenly take Bryz' place. And if they they choose to move on from Bryz, i don't think Mason is the answer. But Michael Leighton was a joke and Bryz is getting worn down without a serviceable backup. Enter mason to at least provide an NHL goalie to take a game or two occasionally. If he 'rekindles' his career, deal with that then. If not, he's a hell of a lot better than Leighton!!

2.5 million for a backup that has proven that he's not qualified for the job. Like I said, you guys deserve all the bad goaltending you get.

You guys had Bob, and you were impatient + your goaltender scouting is beyond piss-poor. You guys unceremoniously shipped him off. Now you have a horrid first string goalie and no back up...instead of giving a piece to get a legit goalie (i.e. Bishop, whom your team was in the running for) or instead of drafting and developping someone (cough...Bob), you turn around and trade for the player with the ominous tag of 'worst number 1 in the league'. Then when you have him you propose signing him to a ridiculously overvalued contract extension. I can't wait to see the flyers have a long term commitment of 8+ million dollars for 2 goalies that can't carry the mail.
