Nicklaus returning to Augusta

Jack Nicklaus has all the green jackets he needs -- six of them -- but he's not completely finished playing golf at Augusta National during Masters week. During a national conference call Thursday, Nicklaus said he will play in the Wednesday afternoon Par-3 tournament this year and intends to play for many more years, in part to accommodate his grandchildren who want to caddie for him. Nicklaus also edged closer to accepting the role of honorary starter on Thursday morning, joining Arnold Palmer, who did it for the first time last April.

His ego can't let him gracefully step out of the limelight. It's like forcing us to watch an old black and white movie over and over in a jail cell. Show some class and play with your grandkids on a beach in Florida and stop trying to steal the show from the young folk. You were great, you had your day, now do us all a favor and fade into the sunset like a good cowboy. And, if he is given the captaincy of the Presidents Cup one more f***kin time I'm going to stop watching TV altogether.

he's just playing the par 3 tournament, grandpa's everywhere can still hit the ball 90 yards and putt.

You're right. I'm overreacting. I'll tell you this much though, when you turn on the old telly come Thursday afternoon of Masters week guess who is the first face your going to see. It just gets wearysome to see great guys like Palmer and Nicklaus milking things on and on and on. How many times do we have to see these two cross the little bridge when the Open comes along. Take a look at Trevino and Norman. They left the game to the young bucks. The media is the biggest culprit in all this. They were critical of Norman when he didn't want to play the "Old People's Tour". Why should a guy of his stature bother? He's filthy rich, he's got absolutely nothing to prove and his back hurts. In fact, I am going to predict the absolute demise of the elderly tour. What do the greats like Crenshaw have to prove? The tour is actually turning into extra life for the second and third tier of players who never made much of the regular tour. So, the question becomes: who wants to see them?

No escaping now.....!!!

While we're on the subject of the Masters and the network that covers it, is it fair play to declaim right now that this is one fan that absolutely can't stand Jim Nantz? Every time I hear that guys voice it makes me want to stick a grenade up my butt and pull the pin. You know? I'd rather listen to Kelly Tilghman--and that's tough enough.

Well Jonisagolffan i have to agree about Jim Nantz. The guy is easily the worlds greatest butt kisser and he usually talks garbage trying to turn everything into something spectacular. As for Jack, well i LOVE JACK. He was the reason i started playing as a kid and i will never tire of seeing him anywhere to do with golf. I would sell both my nuts to play 18 holes of golf with Jack Nicklaus. And just so you know(i am Australian) and every year at the Aussie Masters and Aussie Open you see Gregs face plastered everywhere and iam sure thats not his doing like it isnt Jacks at the Masters or anywhere else. Now i live here in the USA and i honestly dont think they show Jack too much. Tiger will break his records but for now he still stands as the greatest winner of golf majors ever and so he should be shown and honoured whenever.

Beast. I like your icon. Your right, Jack is nice to still have around to pay homage too, but I think he lends himself to the media more than he should. I don't know where Nantz picked up his broadcasting skills but if you've ever noticed when players are around a green he speaks in this slow, low voice bringing up a players college or his life out of the ring. You know how when you're watching the Olympics and you are yearning to actually see the events being played but have to go through some human interest story instead. That's Nantz. Next time there's a lull on the green listen for that. It'll make you want to climb the wall. I have the mute button at the ready whenever I watch CBS.

Oh, I forgot to mention that he starts in a little wee-wee voice and slowly builds it slightly louder, then a little more, then a little more... Arrgh!!!!
