Caps Go From Ninth to Third

12:41 PM ET 04.05 | The Southeast Division has become almost beyond self-parody this season, and it's not as if the division was any great shakes before 2012-13. The Washington Capitals, stuck in the teens of the Eastern Conference standings most of the seasons, have now taken over the Winnipeg Jets for first in the Southeast, and by consequence third place in the conference. Both teams have 38 points, but the Capitals have played two fewer games than the Jets. Winnipeg has played the most games of any team in the league. To the Caps credit, they've gone 7-2-1 in their last 10 to take over the division lead, and have been playing much better of late. They got two points out of a shootout victory over the New York Islanders last night. "It's just the matter of continuing to play strong and play a full 60 minutes with the same mind frame," said Washington defender Mike Green, "When you do that, whether it's shootout or overtime or whatnot, when you do that, you are going to win." Green scored the Caps only regulation goal in the victory. Alex Ovechkin netted the shootout winner.

this system is the worst. They are winning a poor division

You can say that again...at least the Caps goal differential is on the plus side.

Winnipeg's is minus 25!

and not only that, all the teams behind them have more points.
You want to reward them for winning a division? Fine...they can't help geography I guess...but seed them where they belong

the Habs are 11-0 vs southeast. I'm sure many of the top teams have similar records vs Southeast teams. If the Southeast didn't have EACH other to beat, then they'd all be even worse...

Wow...that's awful.

yes...at the very most they should get the 8th seed as the 'reward'. ALthough I would hate it if my team was the true 8 seed and got bumped...but I guess as it stands at the moment its no better. I guess that looking at the big picture...this has never happened before.

IMO I don't think a division leader should get jack...their reward should be playing in a horrible division...and that alone should be enough to guarantee that they get enough points to make the playoffs.

Good news for them is that Trouba's leaving Michigan early to join the Jets. -25 goal differential, help is on the way!!!....yeah, he probably won't make them more watchable.

They played Byfuglien as a forward last night to try and shake things up...back to the drawing/draft board.

April 5, 2013  02:36 PM ET

doesn't work because the Jets don't have the forwards with the speed and skill. Big Buff needs pucks to go to the net and he needs passes into the slot to be effective. He looked lost.

They can fire Cheveldayoff now, or they can fire Noel...wait 2 seasons and fire Cheveldayoff then...but this Jets team is going nowhere. It's clear that Cheveldayoff's model hockey team is not what is required to win in today's nhl.

This team was built on the model of truculence that Burkie liked so much. They have so much size, but can't skate for ****. They have no quickness at all and their roster isn't exactly loaded with up and coming prospects. They're a mediocre team that is destined to be a 9-13 finisher every year. I sat through that for nearly a decade as a Habs fan...it isn't fun.

It wasn't a good sign when they hired a guy with "dayoff" in his name.

It's like finding a framed "participate" ribbon on your surgeon's wall were his degree should be.
