Ayanbadejo suggests 4 gay players could come out on same day

12:50 PM ET 04.05 | But it was a quote buried at the bottom of the piece that was most interesting. Ayanbadejo was asked about his recent statement that an NFL player would come out as gay during his playing career. "I think it will happen sooner than you think," Ayanbadejo told the Baltimore Sun. "We're in talks with a handful of players who are considering it. There are up to four players being talked to right now and they're trying to be organized so they can come out on the same day together. It would make a major splash and take the pressure off one guy. It would be a monumental day if a handful or a few guys come out." This is one of those ideas that's so brilliant it's amazing it hasn't been mentioned it before. There's always strength in numbers. While I don't think the backlash will be as bad as Ayanbadejo expects, spreading out the attention minimizes the media focus. Instead of press hordes in one locker room, they'll have to be in four.

Is Ayanbadejo one of the players looking to make a splash?

If not - how would he know?

Not that there's anything wrong with that (to quote Seinfeld)...

I believe he's married with kids, but I guess he could still be one of the 4.

Either way, I think he's just a gay lightning rod for the NFL.

Wow, what an exciting thing for the press! They'll get to see what a gay guy looks like in the locker room!

I wonder if these players will wear rainbow patches on their jerseys.

Really, Nike needs to make rainbow swooshes so anyone who wants one won't run afoul of Der Kommissionar.

They'll be all agog, won't they?

I feel like this dude is always talking about this issue. Kinda weird, since I honestly don't care about what Ayanbadejo has to say about anything.

Maybe he's hoping to line up a media gig after nobody picks him up. Is there a Rainbow Network?

There's lots of people who talk about this issue. Opinions by those who don't agree with Ayanbadejo, though, generally don't get aired.

My 4 'guesses'
Ray Lewis, so what if he is retired, ever hear of Brett Farve?
James Harrison
Ndamukong Suh
and of course Tim Tebow

April 5, 2013  03:01 PM ET

WGAF?????? Why does the media need to constantly make an issue of it? They should just offer a 10 million dollar reward for the first player to come out...

April 5, 2013  03:16 PM ET

We know the first two are Sanchez and Brandon Moore

Don't care, just do not do it on a game day. It is hard enough to get the media to talk about football as it is. Pick a week day in July, say the day of the MLB all star game, nobody watches that anyways and nothing but reruns on Person of Interest.

I blame all of this on the old AFL, the dolphins and Oilers in particular. Once teams started showing up wearing Teal and powder blue uniforms and other pastels this was bound to happen. The slippery slope effect. Teal is a gateway color.

Just do it already.

Put up or shut up.

I really don't care if there are openly gay players in the NFL. I'm just tired of the news articles.

Is it really all that important to football... I don't care what these guys do on their time, it is on the field I am watching...
