Ex-FCC commissioners: Redskins name is 'indecent'

11:35 AM ET 04.06 | The Washington Redskins name, long accused by many of being an offensive moniker to Native Americans, may also be flat-out indecent, according to some former FCC officials and public interest advocates. In a letter to Redskins owner Daniel Snyder, former FCC Chairman Reed Hundt, former Commissioners Jonathan Adelstein and Nicholas Johnson, and others contend that an indecency case could be made against broadcasters who air the offensive name. "It is impermissible under law that the FCC would condone, or that broadcasters would use, obscene pornographic language on live television," they write. "This medium uses government owned airwaves in exchange for an understanding that it will promote the public interest. Similarly, it is inappropriate for broadcasters to use racial epithets as part of normal, everyday reporting." Never using the team's name, they chastise broadcasters for using a name that is equivalent to the "n-word."

This is a recurring issue. Perhaps something should be done about it. As time passes I come to recognize that perhaps this name is wholly insensitive and needs to change. I may not feel personally harmed by it but others might and if the FCC is stepping in there might be a good reason for it.

I wonder if another tribe would sponsor that team if they keep a Native American theme. It may sound gauche to say it but in this day and age of logos and tribes with casinos might very well bid on the naming rights to have their tribe's name inserted into where the offensive name once stood.

Hail to the Redskins,
Now that they're gone,
Moved to the suburbs,
Fight for old Raljon!

Lets rename them the Washington Crackers. I wouldn't be offended. Besides who promised you would go through life without being insulted or offended. Don't believe I read that in the Constitution or the bill of rights.
