Kareem not expecting much postseason success from Lakers

01:26 PM ET 04.06 | The Los Angeles Lakers are currently fighting for their playoff lives, as their thrilling 86-84 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday kept them a half game ahead of the Utah Jazz for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. But even if the Lakers do get themselves into the postseason, one Laker legend does not see them having much success. "It's going to be tough," Kareem Abdul-Jabbar said in a phone interview. "If they do make it, I don't know how far they're going to go. They had been trying to figure out a whole new system," Abdul-Jabbar said, referring to Mike D'Antoni replacing Mike Brown as head coach following a 1-4 start. "That just makes for confusion. They may have to wait until next year." Los Angeles would likely play San Antonio or Oklahoma City in the first round, and they are just 1-5 against those teams this season. If the Lakers get healthy the talent is certainly there, but it would still be a tall order to make a run.

The current Western Conference has been watered down by trades (Harden & Gay) and injuries (Spurs), the Lakers have a chance of winning the WC title, albeit a small chance.

Have to agree with Kareem. There is no magical run on the horizon this year. Maybe with the right first round opponent they could make the second round. The only problem then is it may help D'Antoni keep his job.

hummmm, the only way I see Dumby maybe keeping his gig is to LA make the WCF. Anything less he is gone.
Also a lot will depend on how Howard and Kobe see having him another season. Howard especially since he might sign or not an extension.

No one is expecting a deep run (if any) from the Lakers this year. Kareem's not a prophet, he's just mouthing off now because he finally got his statue and doesn't need to stay quiet anymore...
