Scouts: Andre Smith 'highly overrated'

06:15 PM ET 04.07 | During his weekly National Football Post article called the Sunday Blitz, author Dan Pompei rates the best available free agents at this point during free agency. Reflecting on Eric Winston, who is arguably the best offensive tackle on the free agency market, Pompei concludes during his offensive tackle blurb that "Several personnel men I spoke with find Andre Smith highly overrated." Lack of known interest around the NFL indirectly confirms those sources. Smith is reportedly demanding $9 million per season, and feels that the Bengals are low-balling him. On the other hand, Smith struggled with weight issues in the early part of his career, and there are concerns that he will fall back into old habits after getting a big paycheck. This may or may not be a case of the notoriously penny-pinching Mike Brown playing hardball again, but with the draft coming up and plenty of cheaper RT options available in the early rounds, Smith is running out of both time and leverage.

Dallas should be so lucky...

Overrated or not, Smith would still be a massive upgrade over Doug Free.

He's an offensive lineman!!!

Scouts are all over the place with Smith. He was perceived to be a franchise left tackle when he left college, only to be a major disappointment his first first few years. Then last season he played well, and when free agency started a few weeks ago he was viewed as a valuable commodity; one of the best FA players available.

Now he's "highly overrated", again.

I don't believe that ANYONE knows what to expect from Smith right now.

Classic case of a guy full of red flags (remember, among his other "greatest hits" the old my uncle is my agent, no I fired him, no I hired him again fiasco that was AS's introduction to professional football?) who gets his act together in a contract year. I would have loved Clabo or Winston at a more reasonable salary. They are proven tackles with the right blue-collar character for the team the Bengals are trying to become. Time to shed pounds and that prima donna past they had!

Why in the world GMs don't put more performance standards in contracts is beyond me.

How have all of you forgotten this is the guy who's tig 'ol bitties were flapping in the wind during the combine 40-yd dash!

April 8, 2013  03:25 PM ET

Let his price go down. You sign him then to one year contract. He'll show up ready to work.

Cant argue with that.

Warmack, Cooper, Joeckel, Fisher, Johnson... I would KILL for any of those guys to wind up wearing the star.

Dream scenario - JJ trades Spencer and Dallas' 2014 first rounder to Jacksonville for the second overall pick and takes Fisher, and then with the 18th pick Dallas luck's into Warmack or Cooper.

Ultimate dream scenario - after those moves, Dallas takes Tank Carradine in the second round to replace Spencer.

Course, Jax would never go for that deal and Carradine wouldn't last until the late second round, but thats why its my dream scenario.
