Rivers running out of chances in San Diego

08:01 AM ET 04.08 | Is the clock ticking on Philip Rivers? U-T columnist Kevin Acee created headlines this week, and not only in San Diego. "No one will say it," Acee told the NFL Network, "but I think that 2013 is the final audition of Philip Rivers." NFL.com followed with a story: "Philip Rivers facing last shot with the San Diego Chargers?" ESPN spun off a similar piece. Rivers has been quarterbacking the Chargers for so long, it's odd to think he'd be doing something else as soon as 2014. Only 31, he's not missed a start since opening the 2006 season behind center. I expect Rivers to be quarterbacking the Chargers after this year. But I think Acee is right that it's an urgent time, for Rivers and the team.

His play has been declining for years. Tony Romo and Jay Cutler get ripped week in and week out, but Philip Rivers has been a turnover machine for the Chargers and people are still acting surprised that maybe, just maybe, it wasn't all Norv's fault.

Who's the coach ?

April 8, 2013  08:51 AM ET

Rivers is an average quarterback with an average record. A change in coaching might help a bit, but it comes at a time when Denver is the odds-on favorite in the AFC West and KC fans may have reason to hope for a better season as well. (Oakland? Flynn? Who knows?)

San Diego, though, hasn't done much to make me think they'll improve, and they could once again be the Most Disappointing Team in their division.

Rivers is drying up?

April 8, 2013  09:21 AM ET

As always, until they find something better, they'll stick with Rivers. Anyone know when his contract expires or what the hit is for 2014 season?

End year 2015. UFA 2016. Cap hit $17 million this year and $15 million the next two. Story is nothing more than random thoughts by a man not affiliated with the team.

I don't think much is expected of SD this year so I don't think they'll disappoint by being worse than expectations just meet their low expectations is all.

He's another of those stat guys...however none of the stats come from playoff games (see Tony Romo).

Acee's a hack working for an embarassment of a newspaper. Acee was the biggest cheerleader for AJ Smith and Norv, once referring to them as "my guys" in a column, so I wouldn't take ANYTHING he writes seriously.

To be honest, I don't expect much from anyone but Denver in the AFC East, so "Most Disappointing" is going to be a tough call regardless.

Your 2014 starting QB for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Can I get an award for Most Disappointing post of the day, then?

Damn, that was stupid, and I've already had 3 cups of real coffee.

I'm surprised that the Chargers didn't trade him after they fired Turner. The poor guy never seems happy. May I suggest they trade Rivers to the NYJ's for Sanchez, Tebow, and Revis.

Mike McCoy....mostly OC and QB coach guy.

Rivers' play declined concurrently with the play of the Offensive Line. Not saying he hasn't made some ridiculously stupid plays in the past couple years, but no QB would have played well behind that garbage that was the Chargers' OLine.

And yes, as someone mentioned above, Acee is a bitter writer right now. He's not getting the access to the team he once was and now is just throwing out anything to get attention.

April 8, 2013  01:19 PM ET

I really think that if Rivers had had a decent coach (after Schottenheimer) he could have done a lot better. Turner was a disaster and Rivers paid the price. He is still a crybaby though.

Rivers is his own worst enemy. He doesn't get a call or something doesn't go his way and he blows his top and he becomes too busy yelling at refs and not keeping his head in the game. I remember some interview where a ref said Phillip Rivers is the worst complainer in the league.
