07:37 PM ET 04.09 | Tuesday marked a day of mourning around the entire state of Michigan, and beyond. A legend was gone, leaving us confused, heartbroken and reminiscent. Speaking for my entire generation, simply, this is all we knew. If you haven't heard yet -- and how could you not? -- Jason Hanson retired from the Detroit Lions last week. In his career, he became the epitomy of consistent, playing in the second most games all-time (327), while ranking 18th all-time in career field goal percentage (82.363 percent). Tuesday, the Lions honored Hanson at his press conference by offering high praise. As the presser wore on, three words where thrown around by all three members who spoke at the press conference: Hall-of-Famer. Jim Schwartz said it. Bill Ford Jr reiterated his support for Hanson making the Hall of Fame. And finally, Hanson said he would be honored, but other kickers need to get their recognition from the NFL.

Is Ray Guy in?

Because until he is, no other kicker belongs.

Most field goals of 40 or more yards (total) - 189
Most consecutive field goals of 40 or more yards (total) - 24 (2007-2009)
Most field goals of 50 or more yards (total) - 51.[9]
Most career game winning field goals in overtime - 9 - tied with Jason Elam, Jim Breech, and Steve Christie

I'd vote yes! I'd vote yes for Ray Guy too Otis!!!

18th best in FG% while playing home in a dome ain't gonna cut it unless you just give it to him for playing so long. Great career though.

Totally agree. It's a shame that he has been snubbed all these years. Revolutionized the position and is arguably the best ever.

In terms of kicker vs kicker, if Morton Anderson isn't in, Hanson shouldn't be.

Well... he was a punter... but I otherwise agree.

Jan Stenerud is the only pure placekicker in the HOF. Although I think if anyone has a chance of joining him it's Adam Vinatieri.

Agreed. Hanson won't even get close IMO.

It's like the compiler argument with QBs.

Anderson's records are amazing. He holds so many it's ridiculous!

He should just because he play for the LIONS.

Still amazing about the monopoly he and Eddie Murray have had there.

I remember them and Errol Mann and not much else at kicker.

he's the 'epitome' of whatever. Epitomy is not a word.

Different positions....apples and Frisbees.

I'd never heard of Errol Mann. Was surpised to find he played for the Raiders in the 70's.

One of the reasons FN appeals to me (though not as much as it did years ago). Inevitably I learn new things based on comments from users like you. Thanks Otis.

Hanson shouldn't make it. He played a long time and wound up racking up the third most field goals in history but I don't see why he'd make the Hall.

When's the last time Hanson booted a 50 yarder to win a Super Bowl? Or even played for a SB winning team? And yes, I know winning SBs is a team achievement but the point here is that besides playing for as long as I can remember being alive Hanson didn't do anything noteworthy.

He was an All Pro on three occasions but again he played 21 seasons. Bottom line, Hanson is known for longevity more than anything else, and to be quite frank longevity as a kicker ain't that special.
