Former 5-star WR Neal transfers to Arizona

06:05 PM ET 04.10 | Davonte Neal chose Notre Dame over Arizona as a high school senior, but after his freshman year in college, he's reversing that pick: the former five-star wide receiver and kick returner will play for Rich Rodriguez in Tucson after transferring.

Neal's college choice was a hard one - he skipped his own announcement ceremony as the top wide receiver in the country per ESPN and his family couldn't decide what school he'd pick. His first year at Notre Dame was even harder. He wouldn't crack the depth chart, not recording any receptions after the first game of the season, and struggled returning punts, muffing several, one in the national championship game against Alabama. (Luckily for Notre Dame, it rolled out of bounds.)

When it was announced Neal would transfer, Arizona became the immediate favorite: the Scottsdale native wants to be closer to his family, especially now that he has a newborn daughter, born less than a month after the national title game. He'll seek a waiver to play immediately

The Irish are going, but going to other schools apparently.

apparantly 5 stars don't mean diddly squat.

I hate to see my Irish lose him but I can't fault the kid for wanting to be a responsible parent. Good luck to him...!

Yep, and we all said this was a train wreck waiting to happen. He had Arky on the short list and a local drive-time sports show gave him and his dad the microphone for a few mins while they were in Fayetteville. Helocopter dad doesn't even begin to cover what I heard. Neither had any feel for reality

Good luck, kid. Hope you do well in AZ

It must be really humiliating for those players to be, not only, associated with Manti Teo, but also that national championship game. Man, I'd transfer too, and I don't even play football (believe it or not). Every time ESPN re-runs that disasterous BCS championship game an Irish football player transfers.

...and where were your beloved Trojans on January 7th SU...? Let me refresh your "selective" memory...

"USC (7-6) became the first preseason No. 1 team to lose six games. It's also all but assured of becoming the school to enter the season on top of The Associated Press poll and finish unranked since Mississippi in 1964."

I'm guessing that Sandy hasn't watched the replay of the USC-Georgia Tech game too many times either...!

Truth be told, I didn't watch it the first time it was on.

The difference being, I knew the Trojans and Irish both sucked pretty equally going into Bowl season. And you didn't know til after. Like always, I'm ahead of the curve.
