Adjustable clubs latest craze

Big name companies such as Callaway Golf Co. and TaylorMade are creating drivers that are adjustable so golfers can quickly mix and match club heads and shafts. Want to hit the ball farther? Just switch out a heavier shaft for a lighter one. Want to have better control? Go back to the heavier, less flexible shaft. These new products are the result of a rule change by the United States Golf Association. Before this year, the rule was that a driver's head and shaft had to be glued to be legal during a round of golf. The USGA changed the rule as a concession to the equipment makers and golfers, said Dick Rugge, senior technical director of the USGA, which has seen the rules for clubs and golf balls tighten in recent years. Also, he said, pros have essentially had the ability to adjust their clubs by going to a tour van and quickly changing out components. The rule still stands that players can't change a golf club during a round.

It's just a new way to sell multiple shafts to everyday players. Pros don't buy clubs anyway.

Some are paid to play

the rest of us pay to play

Great. How does this affect the number of clubs you're allowed to carry in your bag? Do extra shafts count as clubs? What's the USGA or the PGA have to say???
