Universal DH inevitable

08:14 AM ET 04.12 | Not only is the pomp not what it used to be, but the circumstances aren't even novel. It's April 11. And the Angels have already visited Cincinnati. The Royals have already gulped down a bunch of pregame cheesesteaks in Philadelphia. And the White Sox have already played baseball in Washington -- for the first time since 1971. It's April 11. And interleague play is already upon us. But get used to it. It's never going away. Ever. ... One of these years, year-round interleague-a-palooza is going to be the development that finally pushes baseball over the edge -- and brings the designated hitter to the National League. Not just for a series here or there. But for good. For the rest of our lives.

Didn't I read this article last year? And the year before?

yep. The 15 team leagues and constant interleague play has upped the pressure to go DH all the time. Reason #1 why I hate the 15 team leagues.

Whatever they decide they need to decide sooner rather than later. Both leagues need to play by the same rules or criteria.

April 12, 2013  09:29 AM ET

Other than the NHL's shootouts to decide games, the DH is the dumbest rule in all of sports. I cringe at the thought of real baseball going away entirely.

THIS ^^^^

It's a shame that they are now pushing to remove the last bastion of what the game was originally. Just a bunch of crap. Just so players can extend their careers.

Spoken like true National Leaguers. ;)

It'll never happen but they need to eliminate 2 teams and make both leagues 14 teams. I nominate the Marlins and Astros

I don't know why they didn't just leave it at 16 and 14. Why do they need the same number of teams in each league?

April 12, 2013  10:40 AM ET

I'm for eliminating the DH completely.

April 12, 2013  10:52 AM ET

Ditto here. I ws under the assumption they were going the other way and getting rid of the DH and batting the pitcher on both leagues. I guess the Players Union wouldn't let it happen. (Show me the bread Ted!)

They wanted 5 teams in every division.

Why do they care? It's a 25 man roster either way.

April 12, 2013  11:49 AM ET

We've also seen that available payroll money is driving salary more than player supply.

Yes indeed... make those pitchers that throw at people stand in against their own ilk....

April 12, 2013  12:05 PM ET

please don't do this or encourage it. NL ball is so much more enjoyable, it keeps the "thinking man" in the phase "It's a thinking mans game." Last thing I'd want to do is watch a 9 to 7 slop fest on a nightly basis.
