08:26 AM ET 04.12 | The Red Wings are apparently close to locking up goaltender Jimmy Howard for what might be the rest of, or at least close to, the rest of his career. How close? "It's really, really, really close," said Howard, who is close to signing a six-year contract worth approximately $31.8 million. The important details are finalized, so what needs to get done? "Pretty much just the little stuff," Howard said. Howard is optimistic an agreement will be finalized by the end of the week. General manager Ken Holland said the sides remain "close" to finalizing a deal. In 33 games this season, Howard is 16-12-4 with a 2.41 goals-against average and .917 save percentage. Howard said these contract negotiations haven't been a distraction.

Eh, Howard's not the worst, and five years is five years. It's not extravagant. But i'm not sure how you build a team from scratch when you're still paying guys 35+ $6 million, have Franzen signed forever, and a bunch of others signed for bad money for a few years.

Nit picking, but the report is 6 years.

As Foil says, these deals just never ever work out. Ever. Hence a dumb move.

Outside of Brodeur and Roy, I cannot think of one goalie in the past 30 years I would want to commit to for 5+ years, especially when you are looking at $5+ mil per.

Well, maybe Hasek.

Jimmy can use that extra cheese to visit the clinic... Too many burns between the legs last night.

I didn't know the new CBA allowed the Buttgoblin in on contract negotiations.

In Holland we trust but ... please, please, please .... don't pull a DiPietro or a Lulongo on us! It never works out well. The evidence is overwhelming!

I was about to say... that 5-hole was an inviting target last night.

They really needed that extra point last night. It wasn't all his fault. Some of our shooters decided to be Linus Omark cute and ... it bit us in the ****.

My sentiments as well. Never let them get too comfy, always make them work for their cash.

Both Brunner and Nyquist made good moves in the shootout. Niemi made magnificent toenail desperation saves on both. The hole between Howard's legs was so large you could've mistaken him for Paris Hilton.

Once Dats made the first SO goal, Howard should have tightened up like a schoolgirl, instead lets two go by.

Goals are scored during shootouts?

As a TOR fan, I somehow thought that was against the rules.....

Speaking provincially... I'm happy for the single point with your heroes...

Hope survives.

I hear you but .... don't look to us to give you any. You'll have to earn them somewhere else. :-)
