Joe Maddon: Bunting is overrated

11:15 AM ET 04.14 | Following another dreadful performance with runners in scoring position during a 2-1, 10-inning loss to the Boston Red Sox on Saturday, Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon wasn't making excuses. He wasn't second-guessing himself, either. "For that group of people out there that want guys to bunt all the time, you don't know the outcome when you choose to do that," Maddon said, of choosing not to bunt with two runners on base and no outs in the ninth inning, and again following a leadoff double in the 10th. "I think the bunt is an overrated play."

This guy is a jerk.

Mr. Maddon: How many more ways are there to score a runner from third base with fewer than two outs versus scoring from second with fewer than two outs?

Really?

Moving runners into better scoring position is call fundamental baseball Joe. Watch a NL game and the art of bunting will be on display for you every night and they don't think it is overrated.

typical AL mentality, "play for the 3 run HR" from the late Earl Weaver.

there are times that a bunt its the logical call, last night the halos had been having hard time to put runners in scoring position, at the six inning Mike Trout reach first base with a infield single, next batter, pujols wonder if pujols could had bunted in order to move trout to second base?unstead he swinged and grounded towards the second base a twin killed clean up the bases, then hamilton come to the plate,,and hit a solo shot had trout been in the second base? halos would had tied the game with one swing,,, but i guess pujols doesn't know how to bunt the ball,,,,

The league does matter when a team's not hitting. It's not like the NL has never stranded runners on 2nd or 3rd when there was less than two out.

That should have been "doesn't matter".

I was hoping that the halos manager had called that play last night, angels losing the game two runs to nothing, halos finally were able to put a runner on base, but either halos manager didn't call the play or pujols didn't wanted bunt trout to second, should pujols had bunted. After pujols clean the bases with a double play against his own team, Hamilton bitter a home run except the bases were empty. thanks to pujols inability in the six inning :-) :-) '-:-)

True - to a point. However, you don't necessarily need a hit to score from third base. A lot of good things can happen when you have a runner on third. It limits what a pitcher can throw out of fear of a passed ball. And if there is a passed ball, the runner on third is a whole lot more likely to score than someone standing on second.

The Phillys do it all the time

Hamilton hit a homerun right after pujols ground double play,,,

Maybe scoring runs its overrated but the way halos had been playing lately, a lousy single a infield single or bunt its a most, after all, its not like the Angeles have great ability in scoring runs,,,

April 14, 2013  11:45 AM ET

Angels can't wait for the long ball, rather any lousy bunt/infield single its wellcome at any time any given game':-) :-) :-)
