Lane Kiffin bans tackling in USC scrimmage

12:12 PM ET 04.14 | USC concluded spring practice Saturday with a Coliseum scrimmage devoid of tackling. This time, however, it was by executive order, not defensive shortcomings. With 20 players sidelined because of injuries, and the Trojans especially thin at tight end and receiver, Coach Lane Kiffin said "there just weren't enough bodies out there." So fans in the stadium and those watching on television saw the Trojans finish workouts with what amounted to a glorified passing drill designed to avoid injuries. Quarterbacks Cody Kessler, Max Wittek and Max Browne all passed for touchdowns and receivers Marqise Lee, Nelson Agholor and Victor Blackwell mostly had their way with a secondary that will be one of the Trojans' major concerns when they reconvene for training camp in preparation for the Aug. 29 season opener at Hawaii.

U$C defense not tackling. How is this different than their games last season?

Must be a bunch of golf fans out there.

LOL...I was thinking the same thing...

I guess I can understand this, with all the injuries they've had.

Hope they're at least hitting in practice. Light contact will make for a soft team when they tee it up for real.

Well ... yeah ... LUS and Guido hijacked a football thread the other day posting about golf.

Ouch!

Anybody caught tackling at practice will be docked a paycheck.

April 14, 2013  07:24 PM ET

Kiffin can at least make the claim this Spring that he was successful in toughening up his players.

April 14, 2013  08:25 PM ET

Not a big deal considering they defenses play flag football in the PAC!

April 14, 2013  08:58 PM ET

Hmmm ... I thought their contracts had language which forbade "practice."

Now this is a wonderful plan, make sure your guys aren't taken any hits or tackles so they are totally prepared for what lies ahead in August. Why are there not more coaches like Lane?

Just so you morons know, we hit all of Spring up until Saturday. Was the most physical we have been in the spring in at least 3 years. Come fall, we will be ready.
