Cards resorting to closer by committee

08:12 AM ET 04.16 | In the eyes of Mike Matheny, Mitchell Boggs isn't necessarily out as the Cardinals' closer -- but he isn't in, either. [Matheny announced] a "mild adjustment" in how he and pitching coach Derek Lilliquist will handle the ninth inning. The upshot is that veteran righhander Edward Mujica, who has a 1.80 earned-run average, is likely to get a ninth-inning assignment or two in the next few days and perhaps righthanded rookie Trevor Rosenthal, who has been up and down in the eighth, would get a sniff, too. Boggs pitched a scoreless ninth Monday, but it wasn't in a save situation. ... When asked specifically if he could see himself using a variety of ninth-inning pitchers, Matheny said, "I think that's where we are."

When you throw close to 30 pitches in the ninth inning with no pressure of saving a game, walk one, gave up a hit, I don't think Mr. Boggs is your answer as a closer.

Excellent idea. That always works like a charm.

Agreed.

You're right, Slinky, but I'm not sure what option he has in the short term. I think Matheny will settle on a closer by June, but for now this is his option.

With the 'pen in flux, it is incumbent on the starters to go deep into games ... Lance Lynn has to do better than 5 innings an outing

Ditto...

And, for the record, how about this Shelby Miller kid??

Granted, its 2 starts, but this kid is making the organization look brilliant AGAIN by not putting millions into Lohse and going with youth.

You do what ever you have to do. There aren't exactly any closers available elsewhere at the moment.

I'd go with Salas.

Exactly - no one has "risen" to the position. Even Motte has issues when he's on...

I agree use Salas as closer

April 16, 2013  01:50 PM ET

I don't consider it closer by committee as much as searching for the guy who will rise to the opportunity.

April 16, 2013  04:14 PM ET

Last year didn't Cards put Lynn in bull pen for a while last year? if so could he close and can Rosenthal start or other option?

its easy, just try everybody untill somebody holds up to the ocaccion,,,

That's a risk to Lynn's value and mind set as a starter. He apparently did a great deal of conditioning over the off season in an attempt to strech out his number of innings. He was sent to the pen last year because of fatigue.

I'm sure someone is going to rise to the occasion eventually. There are a lot of good arms in the pen. Someone will settle down for the ninth eventually.

I really don't know who will settle into the spot. Many of them have the arm for it if they can develop the mentality for it. I'm not any more willing to attempt predicting which one it will be than Matheny is. Someone will have to step up because I'm thinking Motte is gone for a long time if not the entire season. That really stinks because he finally figured it out last year.

A closer need to know he is the closer and I would like to see Boggs in 8th & Rosenthal as the closer!
