06:37 PM ET 04.16 | Long-time 49ers fans have to remember the countless Super Bowls that quarterback Joe Montana delivered to San Francisco. Now, the younger generation of fans could be getting a chance to witness his son donning the 49ers jersey. A source told the Associated Press that Nate Montana will work out for the 49ers in their local pro day on Wednesday. Nate, also a quarterback, played for a different college each of his four years. Last year was undoubtedly his best while playing for West Virginia Wesleyan, completing 225/436 passes for 2480 yards and 19 touchdowns. The younger Montana is not expected to be selected in this upcoming draft. However, he could be picked up as an undrafted free agent afterwards, and given his direct lineage to an all-time great, the 49ers could come calling.

If he were able to make it in the NFL he won't be accused of having it handed it to him. Sounds like he's had a tough go of it so far, football wise. You never know, Archie Manning's sons haven't done too badly.

Yikes! No pressure..........

Maybe a late bloomer.

We'll be saying the same thing when Brady's son comes along to the NFL Draft, why dad did you use videotape to gain an advantage over your opponents?

Nepotism?

Because he's not that good. This is a courtesy to Joe, nothing more.

No it ain't. He's a PR stunt, more than anything. It's great for the fans; and it'll have Montana jerseys selling better than usual--and who knows? Maybe the kid could look good, go on to do well this year, and be a backup somewhere. Or not, but the team as an organization can only benefit from having him show up to work out a bit.

Why did he play for 4 different colleges ?

He started at ND and left when Brian Kelly told him his future was as a backup only ( and then Joe proceeded to burn bridges at ND by publicly criticizing BK).
After ND he kept changing schools, looking for a coach who agreed with Dad. It's only a matter of time before he gets cut in SF and Joe goes off on the 49ers.
Sports parents can be obnoxious!

Exactly. It's not much more than a PR story for the local news.

Phil Simms' son did OK before losing his spleen.

Yes but I think he had peaked anyway

Apparently Nate got some bad sports DNA from Joe's third wife.

Was Gruden the coach then?

Maybe Daddy will buy his son an Arena League team to play for.

What I wanted to know was why he played for 4 different colleges in his 4 years. Sorry for not being specific.
