Bob Bowlsby comes out against paying players

07:49 PM ET 04.16 | Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby is not a fan of the idea of paying college football players. Bowlsby doesn't like the thought of paying certain student-athletes in particular sports while ignoring others. Bowlsby said that "Football players don't work harder than swimmers do. Track athletes work as hard as basketball players." Bowlsby also says the Big 12 isn't looking to expand beyond their current ten school alignment, and will aim to pay its members at a rate similar to that of SEC schools.

Staying at 10 members? Change the conference name, Bob.

I agree Tin Man. They will have to come up with something that doesn't use the word Big, since the Big 10 aka B1G, won't give up their name. Maybe the Central Conference, although WVU doesn't really fit. Anyone got any ideas?

And, no suprise that Bowlsby doesn't want to pay players. That's really not news. Now if he said that the Big 12 wants to pay players, that would be news. As it stands, most administrators and coaches want to keep the black market hidden from the public.

You could include most conferences in that statement....

Big Ten has more than 10 schools (and has for a while)
SEC has a school in Texas which is not considered Southeast
Big East - won't even start that one.
Mountain West has Hawaii
WAC has La Tech

etc.

Seems the conference names are more a branding than factual. IMO

Your last statement is correct, at least for the B1G and SEC. The Big Ten is seen as a brand that is recognized by sports fans and non-sports fans (aka communists). The Big 12 hasn't really been around long enough to have reached that status. They would be well served with a new, more descriptive name.

Disagreement #2 -- Hawaii is PLENTY mountainous, and is the furthest west you can get and still be in the good ol' US of A.

In fact...if one were to look at a map of the Southeast USA (which I just did), one would find that Kentucky isn't considered SE either....

So there.

The Atlantic Ocean (182 miles) is 6x further away from Tallahassee than the Gulf of Mexico (30 miles). Therefore they should be in the "Gulf Coast Sporting Events and Bikini Watcher's League", not the Atlantic Coast League.
