08:01 AM ET 04.17 | At long last, the message appears to have stuck. After a spring training in which manager Terry Collins was "yelled at five times a day" by front office personnel about the team's offensive approach, according to a club source, the Mets are again showing the kind of selectivity at the plate that has been a hallmark of general manager Sandy Alderson's career. The Mets have seen an average of 156.91 pitches through 11 games this season, up from 145.82 last year, when hitting coach Dave Hudgens says players shunned the organizational philosophy of showing patience at the plate, particularly in the second half of the season. ... The team goal, according to Hudgens, is to see 150 pitches per game.

I was going to say Ken Macha. Mets = MLB's version of the Jets.

What is it about New York teams that end with the letters "ets?"

April 17, 2013  10:36 AM ET

The Jets and Mets names clearly come from a fixation on the Radio City Music Hall Rockettes.

i think a hitter should be more selective at the plate with the type of pitches throw it at them, been a free swinger not always works, if you don't believe it ask the falling angels!!!

April 17, 2013  10:59 AM ET

the mets could have a better season than last year except they traded R.A. DICKEY and now they have a new ACE in the rookie HARVEY!!!

front office yelling at Collins fixes everything. the front office should also be yelling at a mirror. they have to share some of the blame for trading away talent rather than pay to keep it.

April 17, 2013  01:04 PM ET

If only they could have looked at 4 more pitches per game last year. I am sure they they would have been a playoff team.

Its the little things. Instead of 88 loses, 88 wins. It boils down to those 4 more pitches per game.

I'd get a new manager if I had to yell at the current one 5 times a day. If that didn't work, I'd resign because it's obvious one of us has some problems.

April 17, 2013  01:40 PM ET

If mets got a different manager something tells me they would yell at him everyday.

They actually paid to have it go away (Bay) or are paying it to be hurt (Santana).

4.2 more pitches a game, eh? That ought to solve all your woes.

I hope Ike Davis wakes up. His woeful start this year is even worse than last year's. He looks clueless in the batter's box. He looks so vulnerable to pitches that graze the outside of the plate, especially when he's up against a southpaw. Keith Hernandez should come down from the booth and give Ike some pointers before management and Terry Collins start yelling at HIM.

April 17, 2013  04:27 PM ET

What good is looking at pitches if you can't hit them....or..even worse ...look at the good ones and swing at the bad ones....now that everyone in baseball knows their philosophy..every hitter will be in an 0-2 hole....

Do you really believe the NY Post? This is information from last season, it is irreverent now, just like the Post. This is just filler to meet the quota of new articles.

The team goal, according to Hudgens, is to see 150 pitches per game.

And here I thought the goal of batting was to score runs.
