Did winning a Cup set Niemi back?

07:51 AM ET 04.18 | Does Todd McLellan believe Antti Niemi is as good as he was in 2010 when, with the Blackhawks, he eliminated San Jose on the way to winning the Stanley Cup? The coach wouldn't go there, but did offer some interesting thoughts on the challenges that goalies face following a successful Stanley Cup run. ... "What happens with goaltenders is you've got to go do it all over again, you've got to re-establish it. They make real long runs, they play every minute of every game, they're emotionally spent when they're done and then they have to start over again," he added. "It's sometimes hard to do." Niemi, his coach said, has "done a good job of it. ... It's not easy being a goaltender and winning."

I really don't think Niemi has ever been the problem in San Jose. Todd Toad, on the other hand..

Bernie Parent, Ken Dryden, Billie Smith, Grant Fuhr all managed to repeat. Maybe it's not so much the goalie but the team in front of him.

it's ALL of it, goalie included. You can be a great goalie on bad team..or at least PLAY great. Look at Olie when he carried the Caps to the Finals, or the Beezer with Fla.

True. I was commenting more on SJ specifically and wondering if the make up of their team is more the issue. It must be maddening to their fans how they can do so well in the regular season and then collapse year after year in the playoffs.

Residents of San Jose's average wage is $96,000. If they want to see a real team, they can afford to fly to Toronto :)

So you're saying that whoever comes out of that visitor's tunnel is well worth the price of admission...

"Did winning a Cup set Niemi back?"

What? No even GW's "fuzzy math" logic can explain that headline.
