07:53 AM ET 04.18 | Officially, they are now on the outside looking in after a loss in Alberta, and yet they have not abandoned hope. The Red Wings steadfastly say they are in the driver's seat as they try to find the road to the playoffs. They steered closer to the cliff Wednesday at the Saddledome, undone by a slow start and mishandled pucks that left the Wings with a 3-2 loss and stuck at 47 points. "We're shooting ourselves a little bit in the foot," captain Henrik Zetterberg said. "We're coming out really flat tonight." ... The Wings have five games left to extend their 21-year streak of advancing to the playoffs. They play at Vancouver Saturday, at home next week against Phoenix, Los Angeles and Nashville, and finish April 27 at Dallas.

Maybe a date with the Canucks will get the winged wheel spinning.

Tough sked, even if Columbus' is very similar (Kings, Stars, Preds with SJ to boot). But Columbus just took out 2nd place team in the West, and Detroit just lost in regulation to Calgary...

Be gentle Danny I just lost my fake girlfriend.

Put the Monster in!

It would be a shame if they missed the playoffs.

this would certainly make skating more difficult, would it not?

It's a good thing he doesn't play for Torts.

if he played here, he wouldn't be shooting at all

It has been over 20 years since the Wings have had a top 15 pick in the draft. This year could change that,

My God ...these guys are not good at all... not terrible...well most of the time...but they're not good at all...they need to miss the playoffs just to maybe get em hungry again....

Funny how last game at Dallas could be for all the marbles...

April 18, 2013  09:56 AM ET

And they don't control their own destiny...if they Stars win out, they will earn the last spot over the Wings by more regulation/OT wins during the season.

Wings insist Howard is worth the $5.3 million a year.

I said from the beginning that was a mistake.... I'm sticking with that

I mean good god man! 38-17 shot advantage the Wings had. Didn't see the game, nor seen highlights, but from what I've read Howard, not once, but twice crapped the bed and gift goals trying to handle the puck.

Obviously this year was going to be a write-off, after losing out on Suter-Parise sweepstakes and not adding anything (of note) on the back end. Surprisingly it hasn't been defense that's the problem this year, GAA-wise that is; the D certainly has turned it over a ton in our own end, not giving up a ton of goals but inhibiting the breakout that could stoke the offense. One has to think that's where the Wings miss Lidstrom the most.

I don't think Howard as the starting goalie is a mistake...but for $5.3 I do.
