Isles' surprise Hart candidate

08:38 AM ET 04.19 | It's not often the Islanders and Hart Trophy are mentioned in the same sentence, but, in the eyes of some, it may be time to consider John Tavares, who on Thursday night scored two goals and added an assist over the Maple Leafs. ... [Tavares] has the Islanders inching closer to sealing up their own playoff destiny as the victory gives them 51 points on the season and puts them just two points back of the fifth place Leafs. Tavares, meanwhile, now has 45 points on the season including 26 goals. That's good enough to put him third in the league for goals and ninth in points. With how low the expectations were for the Islanders, making the playoffs should give Tavares' case for the Hart Trophy a significant boost.

At the very least he should be in the conversation. The problem is Isles get no national attention. So the national audience gets Pierre and Keith Jones oozing about Sid and Ovie.

Tough to ignore how valuable he's been though.

This is...or should be...a surprise to NO ONE that watches or knows anything about hockey. I will say, even as a Rangers' fan, this kid is top drawer stuff. I wish he was on my team...

The kid has all the tools, to be sure

How long before Snow and Wang ruin it?

Tough to knock Snow and Wang right now. Snow has really put a good product on the ice and gotten guys to sign cap-friendly contracts. Wang hasn't opened his wallet really but I do know I read reports about him trying to get to Brooklyn a year earlier.

Can't bring me down today Phantom!

They're playing as well as anybody recently and Tavares is absolutely great. Sens blew away the Caps last night and Holtby looked like a guy playing a 60 minute shoot-out. Felt sorry for him.

Living in DC, I'm praying the Isles get the 6th seed and the Caps lock up 3rd.

The Leafs get fewer shots on target than the French Army.Hard to win games like that.

They scored on their first two shots of the game. Then the Isles sent their big boys out on the ice to start some fights. Colton Orr got his face punched in a few times by Boulton. That was a game changing fight.

The Leafs Hart candidate was minus two last night winning just over 20% of his faceoffs and had limited ice time...coach must be resting him for that Stanley Cup run.
