Do the Sharks need home ice to win the Stanley Cup?

12:01 PM ET 04.19 | The NHL season is coming to a close, and the Sharks aren't quite guaranteed a postseason berth, but are tied at 53 points with the Kings for fourth place. This is a close race because of such a short season, but the Sharks need home ice advantage. Usually in hockey, the arena doesn't matter too much, but for the Sharks, seemingly, it means everything. The Kings own the tie-breaker, but the Sharks have been on the prowl and are looking to take back their spot as one of the superpowers. Remember three years ago when the Sharks were first place in the Western Conference? Yeah, not too many people do. I'll tell you what, however, if the Sharks get fourth place, they're going to the conference finals. The Blackhawks may not be the most ideal team to play in the finals, but the Sharks can easily get past the Ducks, who they've swept this season already. It's going to be a tough task for the Sharks, but they've struggled majorly on the road this year, and almost had a flawless home stand against some quality teams.

No. What they need is balls and heart and small things like that.

Golden Gate Sports?

I don't wanna know.

This author obviously doesn't follow hockey. That being said the Sharks are the best home team in the NHL this season with only 1 regulation loss. The trades of Clowe and Murray have resulted in the Sharks being a much faster team on the ice which has been their downfall in recent playoffs. Last year they got bounced in the first round because their penalty kill was atrocious (St. Louis was around 50% on the power play in the series), but this year they are one of the best PK teams in the league. Do I expect the Sharks to make the finals? Nope.

You keep saying that. One of these days you might as well find out and put your fears to rest ... or not.

Sharks and the Cup in the same sentence. A first and last.
