FCC has no problem with David Ortiz's profanity

10:44 AM ET 04.21 | Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz used some colorful language during his pre-game speech this afternoon at Fenway Park. ESPN showed it on a delay and was able to bleep it out, but those watching on MLB Network and NESN heard it live and unedited. Oh, the horror. While this sort of language is usually frowned upon on broadcast television and radio, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) made it a point this afternoon to say that they didn't have an issue with it. FCC Twitter: David Ortiz spoke from the heart at today's Red Sox game. I stand with Big Papi and the people of Boston - Julius By the way, that statement was written by outgoing FCC chairman Julius Genachowski. He attended Harvard Law School.

Well...at least he didn't flash his nipples.

I don't have any problem with what Ortiz said. In fact, I don't have any problem with "profanity" in general. Making one word to express a thought taboo while another word to express the exact same thought is acceptable seems like a silly use of our time. It really is just an exercise in vocabulary at that point.

That being said, I do find the FCC's enforcement of these rules a little arbitrary and capricious. How are broadcasters supposed to know what they can air and what they can't if the rules aren't clear and the enforcement of the rules isn't consistent?

At least we have a standard now..As long as it comes from the heart....How brave and noble are those "outgoing" in their positions in life....Does anybody really care anymore about this stuff?

Liberals need rules because they put their faith in a strong central figure. Libertarians and Irish will tell you to go F yourself, and make you feel good about it.

Hoos your Papi!

Much can be learned by reading a little bit of Stephen Covey. Life a life of deficit spending (of your emotional bank account) and bad things happen. Spend a life investing in your future and the future of your social networks, and a day will come when you can be cut some slack.

The F bomb has cultural significance amongst athletes and South Irish alike. It's like other words in our language (s--ks) which have graphic origins but lose meaning with common use. A part of the brain needs to cut loose in special times. It's what makes us human.

I very much frown on profanity in front of children especially at a sporting event, probably because I have three young ones myself, BUT I have ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEM with Ortiz dropping the F-Bomb in that situation. I thought it was awesome and very fitting with the rest of his speech and how we all feel about our country and our citizens.

I wouldn't put it only on liberals...seems to me there are a lot of conservatives, especially the religious right and their political cronies, that want to tell you how to live your life and make laws to enforce their views. It's not a left/right issue, it's people of both persuasions that can't just let people live their lives and mind their own effing business.

BTW...it was GWB's FCC chairman that fined CBS $500k for the Janet Jackson nip-slip in the Super Bowl, like CBS had any way of knowing that was coming. Last I checked, GWB wasn't and isn't a liberal.
