Dolphins adopting horizontal, need-based draft approach

07:27 PM ET 04.21 | The Miami Dolphins are going to take a horizontal, need-based approach to the NFL Draft, according to general manager Jeff Ireland. The team is not going to rank each players, but instead will order the players by position and then in different tiers within positions. That way they know which players are worth taking in which round when the need for that position arises. From there, they can narrow things down by considering which positions the Delphins need help in. As Ireland put it, the team will think in terms of "musts, needs and wants."

So after how many years on the job, Jeff Ireland finally comes up with a plan for drafting players? Can we just skip watching the season and just award this guy Executive of the Year right now?

I'm sure they have needs... but they're also years away from making a championship run...

I can't remember the last time a Super Bowl winning team was built on a "need-based" draft approach.

My take is Ireland cracks open a bottle of Tangueray 10, drinks until he falls down and from there starts making his draft decisions. It just might work, it sure won't be worse than he's done in the past.

Horizontal? Like side-to-side instead of down the field?

Assuming that's not what he's been doing all along.

One could never tell.
