Historical futility in Miami

07:02 AM ET 04.22 | No one expected the Marlins to win many games this season, but few could have expected such futility -- futility that runs deeper than wins and losses. [They] are by far the worst-hitting team in baseball: their .242 weighted on-base average (wOBA) is well below the second-worst Mariners' .279. ... The Marlins' start through 19 games is historically bad. They have never won fewer than five games in their first 19 in franchise history -- they started 5-14 in 1995, 1998, and 1999. The Marlins, with 43 runs scored through 19, become the 19th team in baseball history to host such an anemic offense and only the fourth to do it in the 2000's.

Gets rid of just about every offensive threat.... then the interns say - hey - why is the offense so anemic?

April 22, 2013  08:26 AM ET

this is the reality of Miami: I refuse to have any of their pitchers on my fantasy roster because their offense sucks so much. Them and the Houston Astros.

The Fish are on pace to win less games than the Mets did in 61.

April 22, 2013  09:20 AM ET

Selig approved the trade. The writers should go ask him some serious questions. Like: Is there ANY trade you will not approve in the interests of MLB?

April 22, 2013  09:29 AM ET

Selig and Loria. Screwed the Expo fans.
Bilk the people of Miami for a new stadium.

Something fishy with these two.

April 22, 2013  09:29 AM ET

When you have no talent, you do not win.

April 22, 2013  09:30 AM ET

It isn't just the marlins and their fans that suffer. The integrity of the game suffers. Any team in their division has an unfair advantage as a wild card team simply because all they need to do is play .500 ball all year against everybody not named Marlins and pound heck out of florida. Same in AL West with the Astros.

When you appoint an owner to be your commissioner you have put the fox in charge of the hen house....

The Cubs have been doing this badly for nearly their entire time in MLB but nobody wrote any articles about them. Poor Cubbies. No respect. :)

In all fairness to the Marlins, they were built to win 50 games this year, and if all goes well, they could succeed.

Don't let the fan base get wind of this. All three of them will return their season tickets.

April 22, 2013  11:20 AM ET

......the braves, mets, nationals, would be closer to .500 teams except they get to play the marlins and the phillies 18 x per year......should be a law against it.....

April 22, 2013  11:41 AM ET

If they break the record, I hope Selig is on hand to commemorate the occasion. Maybe throw out the first ball at the next game. Or the owner. Just something fitting.

April 22, 2013  12:10 PM ET

Why is there even a Baseball team in Miami......no real fanbase to begin with.

Somebody has to play them.... Plus if all teams within the division do well against them, it's averages itself out, no ? Stupid moron.

There's three? That's a lot more than I figured.

How much longer before Loria blames it all on Redmond and fires him? He'd probably be doing the poor guy a favor right about now.
