Cubs ready to demote two young stars?

07:05 AM ET 04.22 | The future of the Cubs hasn't much helped the club in the present. Poor fundamentals, atrocious fielding, an inability to close out games and a lack of clutch hitting have been prevalent during the first three weeks of 2013, leading to a 5-12 record and a perplexed manager who threatened to send two of its biggest stars to the minors. "If people keep playing like that, you have to find options," Sveum said before a 4-2 loss to the Brewers. "Give people playing time at Triple A to figure this stuff out." People? The Cubs surely can't send down stars like Starlin Castro and Anthony Rizzo, right? "You have to perform," Sveum replied. "You can't keep not performing."

Nothing like feeding entitled veterans a piece of humble pie?

What do you mean you "can't keep not performing"? The Cubs have been doing it very well for over 100 years now.

Do the Cubs still have options on Castro & Rizzo?

April 22, 2013  08:30 AM ET

Based off of what they did last season and what little they did in the off season how they're playing can't be much of a surprise.

Has anyone thought that maybe Castro is not as good as they think or maybe he is laying down and wants to be traded somewhere else. When Sveum took the Cub job did he really think he could turn them around or took the job to pad his retirement.

......with the boy wonder behind the curtain....his penchant for curse killing will continue...in 3 more years ....when cubbies raise the flag.......so be patient and watch him work.....and take notes la la land....

April 22, 2013  09:15 AM ET

Why don't they just bring up their AAA team........ and send the whole shootin match down for a couple of games.....

April 22, 2013  09:17 AM ET

Did they leave anything out?...." Poor fundamentals, atrocious fielding, an inability to close out games and a lack of clutch hitting.."

Nope - that pretty much nails it all - well - maybe the starting pitching? But not sure how to work that in.....

Rizzo is my fantasy baseball DH, He needs to get it going.

That was the one missing part, but not sure that it matters given the no hit and no close out part. Becomes rather meaningless.

Umm, that won't happen. He doesn't have "house money" to play with.

Aren't they doing that now?

the Cubs pretty much stood pat last off season. Apparently the Cubs were satified with their success from last year. They only lost 100 games. on the up side they won 60 games. Epstein , the superman, didn't impress anyone especially Cub Fans. Epstein did nothing to address what were glaring weaknesses last year. Third base last year was manned between Valbuena and Vitters. and center field which was shared between Jackson and Sappelt. Valbuena offered a Little more offense but Vitters was better defensively In center field neither offered much offense.

ONLY lost 100???? On the UP SIDE they won 60???? Wow, I hope this is tongue in cheek or you have pretty low standards.

I see the Cubs do have Ianetta , who was out with a wrist injury last year, is an up grade at 3rd but still not a savior to Cubs lineup. Look for a fire sale around All-star game. in meantime bench castro a few games, maybe that will get his attention and ignite a little fire under him.

April 22, 2013  11:07 AM ET

correction Cubs donot have Ianetta. I meant to say Ian Stewart at 3rd

The cubs addition of Scherholz the Cubs did improve teir outfield putting Scherholz in RF and moving DeJesus to center with Soriano in LF.
