06:51 AM ET 04.23 | Perhaps there was another motive behind J.R. Smith having been so willing to add a tattoo -- a Knicks tattoo -- if the team wins a title. [During] a "SportsCenter" segment on Monday discussing his Sixth Man Award, Smith said that New York is where he wants to finish his career. "Without a doubt," Smith said. "I was born in New Jersey, born and raised. I would love to retire a Knick." This offseason, Smith could be tempted to leave financially. The Knicks can only pay him up to $5 million based on his Early Bird Rights -- 175 percent of his salary this season. But another team with significant cap space can offer Smith a higher amount, and the Knicks would be powerless to stop him from leaving.

Not bad for a guy to say it now instead of waiting this summer. We'll see if the Knicks will take that discount.

QUOTE(#2):

Probably want to wait until after the playoffs to discuss this. JR is always about 1 quarter of basketball away from being stoned by Knicks fans.

Lol, so damn true. They love the guy until he starts making bone-head plays again.

I guess China was an epiphany for him.

J.R. Smith has to stay. He and Melo both have a a man-crush on each other. They're inseparable.

That would make jgb a Lakers fan...

I would like to see JR and Jamal Crawford have a "horrible shot that went in" contest....

Who would win?

Take Care Of Business First, Bro.

Can't we go over the stupid cap to pay him what he deserves? He's worked his butt off on and off the court... for his standards this is great stride. If Lakers can look at 80 million savings and still keep Kobe Dolan can sure do this.

I also hope Melo gets MVP. If you look at Lebron he's got Wade, Bosh and a great supporting cast. Take Melo and all Knicks have is very old guys and worthless players. MELO is the real peoples MVP. Lebron is a Nike logo.

Let's go Knicks!!!!

I think the same thing will happen as it happened to Lin, Osik. Someone will throw out a 3 year 24-25 Million dollar deal and he will be out. Phoenix, Orlando, ATL, Minn., maybe even the Spurs. I think he stays if they win it all

Are New Yorkers the only real peoples? Hah. The denizens of Heroin nightclub in South Beach think they are real too (when they can remember their names).
