Threat of DL looms over Rockies veteran

06:59 AM ET 04.23 | Forgive the Rockies for, one season after great disappointment, a pang of pessimism during this excellent start to 2013. First, opening-day starter Jhoulys Chacin lands on the disabled list, with Tyler Chatwood in line to take his spot Wednesday. Then, first baseman Todd Helton, in a solid groove offensively, misses the weekend with a sore left forearm. Is the other snowshoe about to drop? Have the Rockies reached their zenith three weeks into their season? ... Monday brought a postponement, creating a doubleheader Tuesday at 1:10 p.m. and 6:40 p.m. -- and some good news. Helton's injury has improved after treatment to reduce the swelling, leaving him cautiously optimistic that he will avoid the disabled list. "I am very hopeful," he said Tuesday.

The Rockies should have put a roof on Coors Field when it was built. Helton is holding the Rockies hostage holding on for the money because he cannot perform at high quality anymore.

In hindsight, it may have been a decent idea, but Denver doesn't get a lot of rain or inclement weather during the summer, so it probably didn't make a lot of sense at the time.

It appears that the Denver Post actually had some expectations from this team that won 64 games last year.

I'll give 'em credit for getting out of the gate quick... but there are 144 games left.

Helton's been a class act for so long but it's clearly time to retire. When healthy he's still a decent bat and defender but he's proven that his body is broken down and the best he could hope for is DH duty...which ain't going to happen in the NL (with the exception of road interleague games).
