Are the Timberwolves preparing to trade Kevin Love?

06:19 PM ET 04.24 | Let's face it, this subject was going to be brought up at some point after the 2012 regular season. After missing the playoffs yet again, the Minnesota Timberwolves are still looking for answers to help turn around the franchise. A popular answer among many fans and folks in the media is for the firing of president of player operations David Kahn. Bill Simmons of Grantland has an answer that is not quite as popular. Simmons believes the Timberwolves will inevitably trade star power forward Kevin Love -- possibly as early as this summer -- and suggests the team would be better off building a team around point guard Ricky Rubio and center Nikola Pekovic. There most certainly will be some sort of major change next season, but trading Love is not the slam dunk idea Simmons makes it out to be. This franchise owes it to the fanbase to find a way to build a team around Rubio and Love, at least to see if this tandem can be done.

Glen Taylor needs to sell the team. The best decision he made as a team owner is when he fired McHale. The worst decision he made was hiring McHale in the first place.

Then he hired Kahn. I didn't think it was possible, but Kahn makes you wish you had McHale back.

Trade him for the 2nd pick in this year's upcoming NBA Draft? The Charlotte Hornets sure could use some talent.

Love for Bosh has come up quite often in threads where they discuss Miami not being financially capable of keeping the Big 3 together. Although, I'm not aware how Love's salary compares to Bosh's.

April 25, 2013  06:57 AM ET

Love is under contract for 2014-15 and 2015-16 is a player option, worth 16.7 million. Bosh has an early termination option in 2014-15 (20.5 million) and a player option in 2015-16, worth 22 million. Gasol's contract ends after this next season, just like Kobe's. Love for Gasol or Bosh doesn't make any sense. With this year's draft so weak, a Love trade is unlikely to happen. Rather Minny's best shot at improving is to hope for better health next year. With Rubio, Love, and Pekovic they have three solid pieces, but need to still add more. A good draft this year, maybe a shooter like mclemore to compliment rubio's passing and then they at least have some hope for future playoff appearances.
Love needs to have a big season before they even consider trading him, because they would want to get max value, and right now it is not possible.

The appeal of trading Kevin Love for Pau Gasol is his nationality. Gasol and Rubio are both from Spain. I think that's why they might consider it.

Gasol can still post 18 and 9 in the right situation and would give the Wolves an excellent PF-C duo.

It's unlikely the trade happens though.

They aren't trading Kevin Love anytime soon, he's one of the best PF's in the league and one of the faces of that franchise.

Love (with Ridnour and likely either Williams/Roy - to match salary) to TORONTO for DeRozan & Bargnani & 1st round pick (either top-3 pick in 2013 draft or a future 1st round pick).

Of course they are. The only questions is will they get back what he's worth and who take him on?
