QB transfer shakes up Penn State depth chart

07:05 AM ET 04.25 | At least for now, courtesy quarterback Steven Bench's plans to transfer, the QB field at Penn State is a little less deep. Nittany Lions coach Bill O'Brien said Wednesday that Bench was granted a release to leave the program. He will finish the spring semester at Penn State. Bench's departure likely puts sophomore and junior college transfer Tyler Ferguson atop the depth chart. Bench and Ferguson split first-team reps in spring practice, which wrapped up Saturday. O'Brien had said that he wouldn't decide on a starter until August preseason camp, when prized freshman recruit Christian Hackenberg joins the competition. Bench didn't see much playing time as a freshman in 2012 backing up record-setting senior Matt McGloin.

The last name being Bench, might not be a good sign; however it didn't hurt Johnny too much.

Damn...that says it all. End of this thread. ;)

Bench had an offer from Rice during his recruiting. FSU & Mississippi State were interested as well. The kid's from Georgia...maybe he's too quick for the B1G. ;)

Owls in the mix.

Bet they have a better record and finish ranked higher than PSU this year, too.

Get the good education Stevie

Two more days to pay the man!

LSU>Arky

LUS>WPS

Woo Pig Fooie........

So the guy is splitting reps with the first team offense, the coach has said the starter is not yet decided upon, and he decides to pack up and transfer? What's his reasoning there?

No heart. Just like Kiel out of Notre Dame...no...wait. Cincinnati. No...wait...LSU.

I don't think it's fair to lump Bench in with the likes of Kiel or Mustain. He's from tiny Cairo, GA in the southwest corner of the state. He got a scholly offer from PSU and took it. Other schools are mentioned, and I do not doubt that they had an interest, but I can find evidence of only one offer - PSU's.

Likely, there's more to his transfer than playing time. Cultural adjustment may be one factor, going from a rural one-high-school county in SW GA to a NE PA campus with an enrollment larger than most cities and towns in SW GA.

I was wondering how long it would take until some fool brought up this completely unrelated fact.

If he committed after the **** hit the fan, then it is unrelated, if he committed and then the **** hit the fan, then I would consider it related and he has every right to move on....

And the moron from texas is heard

Another kid who is not as good as he thinks he is. He was backup last year. This year he couldn't clearly beat out a JUCO transfer and a true freshman who isn't even on campus yet. Nuff said. Transfer to Directional State University, play your three years, have a blast and get a real job when you graduate. Good Luck! Seriously, good luck.

I am sure you can back that up with some facts, ma'am. Guido did in his first post, so it's only fitting you should do the same.

Just glad I'm not trying to convince the masses that Penn St is a normal place after one of the worst scandals to ever occur at an institute of higher learning

Thank you, Tin Man, for being the voice of reason.

The fact is, he wanted to come in this year and be handed the job. It never crossed his mind that he had to compete for the job. Can you say, div 2 .

April 25, 2013  09:03 PM ET

This is very simple...Bench was a bit of a reach, being recruited away from Rice after the sanctions took a toll on the 2012 class. Bench and Ferguson split reps in the spring and both were very similar in the Spring game, even though Bench had 1.5 years in the program to Ferguson's 3.5mos. Ferguson has better measurables and upside. After the spring game last saturday, O'Brien brought Bench in and told him that he would be 3rd on the depth chart once Hackenburg arrived on campus in June. That gave Bench the oppty to decide whether to stick around or take advantage of the transfer rule from the sanctions and play immediately. He obviously chose to leave. Best of Luck Steve!
