Jags ready to wheel Friday's first pick

06:53 AM ET 04.26 | Among the winners Thursday, Jacksonville may yet wind up a very early winner on Friday, too. They made a "safe" pick by grabbing Luke Joeckel and then watched as EJ Manuel was the only quarterback taken in the first round. That means Jacksonville has their pick of plenty of options at No. 33 on Friday, with Geno Smith, Matt Barkley, Tank Carradine, Arthur Brown and a slew of other guys. The option to trade is very much there for them, too. The only reason that Dave Caldwell won't get a good night's sleep is because he's fielding trade calls.

I was impressed with Jacksonville taking Joeckel. I really didn't think they would.

They usually reach on some headscratcher. It's almost turned into an annual expectation with them (which is a large reason why they were 2-14 last year).

MJD is immpressed as well. Joekel is a day one starter that should open up some holes for him to scoot through.

Calling Jacksonville a 'winner' for making an incredibly obvious choice is sort of faint praise. The fact all those QB's slipped to the second round is more a factor of other teams not reaching rather than some incredible stroke of luck. All of them legitimately belong in the second round. This is a fat boy draft and the top fat boys got drafted, simple as that.

And the Pats traded out of the first round, getting 4 picks from Minny in later rounds for one late in the first.

The Dark Lord has dealt. The Force has strong influence on the weak minded.

Going to be an interesting day in Jacksonville, if their looking for a slow linebacker, Manti's available!!

Ready to WHEEL the pick? I know what they're TRYING to say, but wheel and deal is the better choice. Haven't ever heard a team is going to "wheel a pick"

I was thinking they meant "wield" but weren't familiar enough with the English language, as their vocabulary consists of 3-letter abbreviations for texting. LOL.

Someone from Jacksonville might find it hard to sleep in NYC. It's the city that never sleeps. Sirens, horns and bus engines will keep you awake if the guy in the next room with something he picked up in Times Square doesn't.

And that explains the difference in those two teams for starters. This a "draft happy" league more than anything and if you do it well, you go near the end most years. Barring a miracle the next few days......the Jets are on the clock in 2014

I'm not so sure about this any more. The Pats always get multiple lower picks for their first round picks, but they seem to draft low-impact players. The real test of their system is how many of these bargain picks will ultimately start for them.

My take on this is that there aren't a lot of can't-miss guys in this draft. So, The Hoodie has gone with quantity over quality. Bring a bunch of late-round guys in and see who's good enough and hungry enough to make the team. If nothing else, you haven't invested much in a guy who turns out to be a dud.

I take back my comment (almost): Gronkowski was a 2nd round pick, and Hernandez was a 4th round pick. The Hoodie knows his stuff. But one of their highers impact players on D, Jerod Mayo, was a legitimate first round pick. And it always seems like the Pats have way more draft picks than they ever use.

I grudgingly respect that. Turning 1 pick into 4 was a great move, probably the best of the draft.I think Raiders turned 1 into 2. Smaller steps, but progress.

True, but the Raiders kept a 1st round pick and is not on the hook to pay the demands a #3 overall pick. Raiders have several problems but they helped both yesterday. They are in Cap hell right now and by trading down they save a lot of money and still get a great player. The also now have a second round pick, in a very deep middle draft.

Jags are being blitzed now by two dozen teams looking for that first pick tonight. They can really come out with a few future draft picks if they want from this! I'm looking forward to seeing what Pats have in mind in round two.
