06:58 AM ET 04.26 | Forgive folks who don't know Derek Jeter for wondering: Is he always like that? Yes, he is. And that may be the best thing you can say [Thursday about Jeter's] chances of coming back and being the Derek Jeter we remember. No one really knows now whether he will. No one really knows now whether he can. ... But defiance may be the role Derek Jeter plays best. Defiance is the role he played Thursday, in his first (and he says only) news conference about the setback he suffered last week, when a CT scan showed another break in his left ankle he originally broke last October. "Is he always like that?" asked a couple of major-league scouts who watched the press conference on television. Yes, he is.

Captain is the role he plays best. Strong will is just in his DNA.

He has always been cocky and he will always remain cocky. Ever see that little smirk on his face when he plays? It's him. either you accept it or you don't.

How succesful do you think he would have been over the years if he let people tell him he can't, he won't, or not expect a lot? What exactly do these people expect him to say? Totally stupid.

It was that don't take me out of game attitude. Yeah my ankle hurts but I'll play through it. Right up to the point he broke that ankle. Had he sat out and had the ankle checked out when it first bothered him per haps 15 day DL might have prevented break. It could have healed during off season and may have been ready on opening day. Of course hind sight is 20/20.
