Verlander's triple-digit heat still missing

06:59 AM ET 04.26 | For starters, the 100-m.p.h. fastball remained absent. But it didn't matter. Justin Verlander was just as effective without it Thursday, braving the damp and chilly conditions, and turning in seven stellar innings against the first-place Royals. ... With only 96 pitches under his belt, he was well positioned to return for the eighth, but cracked skin on his right thumb forced his early exit. ... "C'mon. Yeah, it's not that big of an issue," Verlander said. "That's why I got out of there." ... Just as there's no need to worry about Verlander's apparent drop in velocity, either. For the fifth straight start, he failed to crack 100-plus mph with his fastball, adding credence to a story published earlier this week reporting a drop in his velocity this season.

And what's he dropping to? From 100 plus to 96 plus? Not that big of a deal. Besides how man pitchers in the hsitory of baseball consistently had a fast ball that was over 100 mph over the long haul....

The press breathlessly manufacturing stories from nothing is getting a bit irritating.
