Will Phil lead player unrest?
Phil Mickelson is precisely the type of marquee name who would be welcomed by a smattering of peers disgruntled about working conditions: specifically the new cut rule and the drug policy to be instituted July 1. But whether Mickelson would expend any energy on any form of a movement by labor against the tour's authority or administration is unclear. In fact, when Mickelson was asked to touch on reported grumbling among peers, he indicated he did not have sufficient information on the subject. If one were to estimate the number of golfers sufficiently vexed to ponder action via an association, the hunch would be more than a few but fewer than enough. "About 30," said one player.

Wow, the new cut rule.
Get over it and step the game up....the new rule is for a reason.
Are these players gonna start gripping because Tiger kicks their butts week in and week out....when Tiger chooses to play...?
What would Mickelson be doing saying anything about the issue.....is he everybodys messiah ?

If one of the marquee players takes the lead in countering the administration it's usually a sign that the players are displaying some backbone. The necessity of drug-testing for steroids in a golfer is about as meaningful as it would be to drug test a piano player. Steroids don't provide someone with the ability to have anymore finesse in their golf swing. Again, if Tim Finchem was someone with a moderate amount of smarts he would know that. What the players should do is band together and demand that the commissioner be replaced. That would be real progress for the tour.

These guys are making more money then they ever dreamed, You can finish 25th and still take home 6 figures, Their visibility is through the roof every one knows the golfers even if they dont watch golf, and u guys wanna replace Finchem because a couple of hacks will get cut to make the field more competitive????? ps......Drug testing is a way of life In the private sector, sports, public corps, get over it!!!!!

I've said it before, and I'll say it again...any time Fannation ends a headline with a question mark, the answer is always, "No."
But on this drug-testing point...if there AREN'T drugs in pro golf, the players should welcome testing. If there ARE drugs in pro golf, the clean players should welcome testing.
Or are they going to fight it like the MLBPA did, and have the whole thing blow up in their faces? Are they really too dumb to understand that what's happening in baseball will happen to them?
If they can somehow rationalize that they're immune to the witch hunts tearing through the other major sports, they do so at their own peril.

You can be sure that professional golfers don't fear drug testing any more than your grandmother. The point many of us are trying to make is that there are so many things that have gone on within the tour which have gotten it completely sidetracked and has nothing to do with facilitating progress. If you review the last dozen years with all the crazyness that has enveloped the sport is does indeed point to one person who is the aegis for these ills. Establishing a new cut line is one of the few things that the commissioner has gotten right.

Steroid testing in golf is the dumbest thing I've heard of. People, hitting the ball farther has nothing to do with draining a 40 foot putt...or making that ball spin back to the pin on a 130 yard wedge shot. And for those of you comparing golf to baseball, please try and go play a round with steroids and then a round when you are clear of them...see if it helped you out...
As for the cut rule, who cares...Tiger will win half the tournaments he plays in, all these other hacks are playing for top 10 finishes. I personally love it whenever Tiger wins, I hope he wins all tournaments...when do you see him smile? After he wins...Phil is always smiling...get some grit and maybe you'll win a tournament every once in a while (if Tiger is not playing).

HGH helps a person recover. Golf is not as physical as football or track and field, but HGH is a performance enhancer. 4 rounds in 90 degree heat is physically taxing. If they weren't testing for HGH and other performance enhancers, then they were probably being used.
For the cut rule, I can recall a couple players making the cut on the number and getting hot on the weekend, either winning or getting a healthy top 10. The top 10's are more important with the points race.
They only show a few players on TV each week, but the paying spectators are being cheated on the weekends from seeing other players. If the new cut rule was to speed up play on weekends, they should try to speed up play by enforcing time rules instead of limiting golfers.
