09:10 AM ET 04.27 | Baseball commissioner Bud Selig seemingly has planned to step down, retire or vacate his job almost since he took office back in 1992. But this time, he is much more emphatic about his retirement pronouncements, even to the point of believability. "You can believe it,'' Selig said, pretty convincingly, by phone. There are several reasons his public proclamations are more believable this time, but one previously unknown nugget that's come to light adds to its credence. According to two ownership sources, Selig was actually offered a five-year extension when he signed the two-year deal a year ago, and without hesitation he took the two instead. When the term expires, he'll be 80, and word is he figured that was a nice round number.

<wild applause>

Hopefully the new commish tones down interleague play. In the alternative, I hope he mandates a DH in both leagues.

I know that NL purists would rather eliminate the DH altogether but I don't think the players' union will allow that to happen.

The only reason Selig is the commissioner for so long is because he's buddy-buddy with all the owners since he was one himself. Really...can an 80 year old really keep up the rigors of a high profile job such as MLB Commish?

It's about time...

I demand an investigation into what Selig knew about McGuire, Sosa + Bonds while they were growing the game (and themselves)...

Looking to leave? The door is over there, Mr. Sellout.

Another total lackey puppet for the owners should not be hard to find. Just drop the title Commissioner and call it what it is. Like the Vatican Pope so and so. MLB can call the next guy Pinocchio II, Selig was Pinocchio I.

That's a little over the line, 50. You probably shouldn't be trashing prominent religious leaders in this forum by comparing them to Pinnochio or, worse, Bud Selig.

That rotten SOB has done more harm to baseball than any other commish in 100 years.

April 28, 2013  01:42 AM ET

This might be the first decent decision Selig has made as commissioner.

Possibly, but what if there is black smoke coming out of the MLB offices when they name a new puppet?

hah!

Just wish the NFL would pay off "Goody" Goodell and get rid of him.
We wait to see who the next team will be that is screwed by this commissioner all of the sake of making himself look good. What a weasel. Betcha those guys drafted threw away the photos taken with him at the draft party.

Would you rather keep Bud or have Torre has your commissoner ?

A little sensitive are we? I thought it was a pretty solid analogy.

I'm sure you'll be able to throw your weight and influence around to get this to happen...

I think Hillary would make a great commissioner. MLB needs someone with the balls to stand up to blithering idiots like Loria.
