Players take blame for lack of Stars success

08:55 AM ET 04.28 | When the Stars return to the ice in October, they could have more than just new uniforms and a new logo. They could have a new general manager, a new coach and some new players. According to a report Saturday by TSN's Darren Dreger, the Stars have fired Joe Nieuwendyk and hired Detroit assistant GM Jim Nill to take his place. Stars owner Tom Gaglardi and CEO Jim Lites declined Saturday to confirm the report, but it was clear as the Stars lost to Detroit, 3-0, that changes are coming. Nieuwendyk has been GM for four years and has failed to put the Stars in the playoffs. He has hired Marc Crawford and Glen Gulutzan as coaches while passing on Dave Tippett and Ken Hitchcock. Tippett and Hitchcock went on to win the Jack Adams Award as NHL coach of the year, while Crawford was fired after two seasons and Gulutzan is on thin ice as the Stars now have the option to end their contract with him. So the possibility of Nill coming in, a new coach being hired, and some roster changes to a team that finished 22-22-4 seem very strong. But as the players sat at their lockers, they said they accepted their share of the blame. "You can point the fingers at them all you want, but the GM and the coach can't go out on the ice and score goals," said Eric Nystrom, who was acquired from Minnesota last season after being sent to the minors. "We didn't get it done as a team, and it's a really hard thing to take. I can't thank Joe enough for helping me out. He saved my life. Gully gave me an opportunity to play. I have so much respect for both of those guys. That's what's so tough about not making it, they usually want to make changes."

Based on the money and ownership problems Dallas had when Joe stepped in he could barely ice a team let alone a contender. Under the circumstances he did a good job.
The article claims he passed on Hitch and Tippet. Thiose two had there time in Dallas and both were fired so it is reasonable that he would pass on them. Who ever wrote the story should stick to figure skating.
