09:18 AM ET 04.28 | Nothing is dumber than big league outfielders throwing to the plate when the game isn't on the line. And no one makes more bad throws showing off his arm than the Astros' Rick Ankiel, who winged one into the seats at Fenway Park in the first inning Thursday.

Rick: You don't hit well enough to afford to make stupid errors. Besides, you play for Houston.

What does that mean, thowing home when the game isn't on the line? The game is always on the line. I didn't see the game so I don't know if Ankiel had a shot at getting the runner? If he did, I think it might have been worth trying to stop the bleeding. The box score syas the error cost nothing. Ortiz got a base he would have gotten anyway.

They call it smart aggressive baseball when it works. They call it a bone head mistake when it doesn't work.

Too bad things went south for Ankiel. He looked very good when he came back up as an OF in 2007 & 2008. Since then he's been a putz. Don't know how he still hangs on and gets a contract. His OPS the last 3 years has been .651, .659, and .694. Absolutely terrible for an outfielder. But he is showing a power stroke so far this year.

ANKIEL should play in the DH position, why waste any breath in the field?? better use him as a hitter strictly than use him in the outfield, where he is not going to help the team at all!!!

Boston was already pounding Houston when this play happened so I guess the article writer is saying the throw was unnecessary because it wouldn't have prevented the tying or go ahead run from scoring. I don't agree with this assessment but I think that's what the implication is.

That's WHY the astros should usie him for offensive purposes, why waste any extra out in the outfield?? because by using ANKIEL in the outfield is giving away extra outs,,and astros can't give themselves that type of luxury...

Why is this even a Tribune article when it involves a Houston Player?
