07:29 PM ET 04.28 | Like it or not, newly-drafted 49ers running back Marcus Lattimore may not play a single game in the NFL until 2014. Lattimore, the 49ers' fourth-round selection, was passed over in the draft only because of a devastating knee injury that he suffered last season in college with South Carolina, tearing three ligaments in his right knee during a game. He had a breakout freshman with over 1,000 yards on the ground, earning him National Freshman of the Year honors. Which is why the 49ers may be doing him a favor by "redshirting" him for his rookie season. They already have enough talent on their roster to win a Super Bowl, so there is no need for Lattimore to jump in immediately. Having him sit out a year gives him ample time to recover from surgery and learn the offense, all while experiencing the culture of an NFL locker room.

And exactly who said that this would happen? These so-called writers pull crap straight out of thin air. Which, in any other case, would be amazing.

There is a Lattimore interview floating around from a day or two ago where he openly admits San Fran is being cautious regarding the knee injury and states in effect that both the team and himself are open to the possibility of missing the 2013 season if they decide that's what's best for the ling term future.

Remember, the 49ers are already have Gore, Kendall Hunter and LaMichael James ahead of Lattimore on the running backs depth chart. There is no reason to rush Lattimore back.

San Fran drafted Lattimore as a luxury because they can afford to do so and at no point were they ever planning on relying on Lattimore this year. Even if he does suit up it will be as a backup and his playing time will most likely be extremely limited.

Amazing draft by the Niners. Getting Lattimore and possibly seeing him play healthy in 2014 will be the cherry on top!

Physically he'll be OK for 2014. Mentally will be the biggest challenge. Hope he overcomes the fear of getting hurt again.

A great move and a smart move for all concerned. Likewise, for all concerned, I'm hoping for the best.

I wasn't aware that there was any possibility of him playing in 2013. Everything I heard over the weekend was that he'll be on the PUP list for all of 2013.

SF is taking the long and smart approach with Lattimore, and if he comes back healthy in 2014 it will pay off big for them. That team in the nation's capital might learn something from this regarding their QB.

Exactly the kind of team he needed to be drafted by. As opposed to say the Jets who would have tried to rush him back and ruined him.

Pulling hard for this kid to make it.

This just might be the best match up of team & player from the draft.
