Jets finally release Tebow

12:23 PM ET 04.29 | The Tim Tebow experiment in New York is over. The Jets have released the backup quarterback after just one season with the team. The writing appeared to be on the wall for Tebow after the Jets drafted Geno Smith in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft. Tebow attempted only eight passes for the Jets, completing six, and averaging 3.2 yards on 32 carries, meaning his Jets' career appears to have been a few draft picks and an enormous media frenzy over nothing. We'll see where he ends up -- his size, speed, and kinda his throwing ability still make him a somewhat palatable option for a team interested in installing a changeup offense. The unnecessary attention and ridicule that surrounded the Jets after they added Tebow might be a turnoff.

This pass was classic....

There it is. I knew the interns couldn't pass this story. Kinda of like Tim.

Not sure what the Jets were thinking but it would seem they blew $4M and a few draft picks for Tebow. He might get a shot with another team but he'll have to curb his overt belief in fairy tales.

Jacksonville will be all over this one...Tebow will fill the stands down in Florida...he will be find just watch the circus begin...

I wish you well, Mr. Tebow, I really do. No one deserves the treatment the Jets gave you.

Couldn't agree more. The Jets were, are, and always will be a circus. Amen.

You are correct sir. The Jets are a pathetic joke and he is fortunate to be getting out of there.

That would be called discrimination under EEO laws. Can't make that a condition. But to be fair, the passing technique will trash him anyway.

Some team is gonna give Tebow a shot, if for nothing else but the Jersey sales ;)

April 29, 2013  01:21 PM ET

Now Jacksonville can get Tebow at a fair price.......and I think he will go there and prove a lot of people wrong, and I am not a Tebow fan either but these senario's kinda work that way......or it will be strike 3 in the NFL and yer out.

The Jets got Tebow for 1 reason... Hype.

Another attempt to steal the back page away from the Giants (coming off a SuperBowl win when they signed him).

I'm a believer that Bad Teams should do everything they can to fly below the radar (even in NY - The Mets have been successful at this) - Maybe Idzik is going this route.

The Jags GM has said it before, and he's saying it again: he has no use for Tebow.

QUOTE(#14):

what treatment exactly?

He was brought in against the wishes of his HC, from what we hear. He was never given a real chance to compete, and the starter was clearly not getting the job done. Even when the Jets finally realized they couldn't keep starting Sanchez, they went with the inexperienced McElroy, bypassing Tebow without even giving him a chance.

If you're riding the pine behind a Brady or a Manning, then a backup knows he's not getting in unless the starter goes down. But when you watch the Buttfumble, and see your team go down 21 points in 52 seconds on national TV Thanksgiving night, a guy should expect to at least be given a look.

April 29, 2013  02:05 PM ET

I never thought Tebow was the second coming at QB but he isn't useless either. the Jets are so low class in the way they've handled all of this I feel sorry for the guy. They have totally f'd up his career chances by mismanaging him from the initial trade to the release. They should have released him after the season ended.

April 29, 2013  03:00 PM ET

That's the best thing that could happen to him, the Jets are imploding, call the NSTB!!!

April 29, 2013  03:09 PM ET

Im sure we all saw this coming.. No shot at gator nation but if I were a Highschool QB, and the gators wanted to recruit me.. Id probably pass.. their record of producing an nfl QB is terrible.. great college QB's ... NFL not so much..
