No. 1 pick already a lock?

07:19 AM ET 04.30 | Basically, the hockey world has Joe Sakic to thank for Popeye Jones' son Seth playing youth hockey in the Denver suburbs of Littleton and Centennial. [There] is a very good chance Seth Jones will play for the Avalanche next season and beyond. The Avs on Monday won their biggest contest of the season -- the NHL draft lottery to get first dibs on Jones, the No. 1 draft prospect, who is considered the next Nicklas Lidstrom or Chris Pronger. The Avs, who are desperate for a do-it-all defenseman, had the second-best chance (18.8 percent) among the 14 nonplayoff teams eligible for the lottery and beat out the favored Florida Panthers (25 percent). Given their needs, the Avs definitely hit the lottery.

But they need defence like Brian Burke needs a scotch at 8 am.

As your lawyer, I would caution you from making these kind of public statements. Unless you want to be sued, of course

"No. 1 pick already a lock?"

Is there any doubt as to who's #1? But, weird things happen even in clear cut drafts.

Interesting pick is #3 Tampa. I'm betting on a nice fat trade there. They could definitely use Drouin or Mackinnon, who couldn't. But they need defence like Brian Burke needs a scotch at 8 am.

They have to take one of those forwards. St Louis is going to be gone soon. Who else do theey have outside of Stamkos (maybe Vinny) to score. Hedman is getting better also.

You're right. Can't count on brittle Vinny anymore and Stamkos needs help. I suspect they grab the best player available or go for that Big Finn Center, Aleksander Barkov. He'll do nicely, much to the Flames chagrin.

QUOTE(#3):

There is a mighty big difference between being the next Nicklas Lidstrom or Chris Pronger. One is an all time great while the other was a giant pylon and a hack who managed to win one lousy Norris while not even being the best D-man on his own team that year. Geez, who writes this stuff?

Some Chara supporter...

First, Succo gets shown the door then the Avs get the # 1 pick. Those are the franchise's two biggest wins in years. Now go for the trifecta and clean out the front office!!

QUOTE(#16):

I don't agree at all about Hedman. He actually looked like he regressed this year.

Living in Tampa, I'm very sick of hearing how much Hedman is improving. He rarely has a positive impact on games. When he's not in there it doesn't make a difference.

I agree with the previous comment, get a forward, lot of talent in this draft. Sign a couple of serviceable blue liners in free agency.

Goaltending will continue to be an adventure, but I don't see a quick fix out there and they seem committed to the two tall guys.
