07:17 AM ET 05.01 | John Tortorella said Tuesday he didn't feel much like talking, then opened up on a number of topics, including the Rangers' trade deadline deals. [Tortorella] chastised the media for previous reports that the coach's relationship with forward Marian Gaborik had frayed before the organization shipped Gaborik to Columbus. "I just think as you saw after the deadline, I thought it just changed our team a little bit," Tortorella said. "And I know you guys will turn it around and say that we didn't like Gabby, and all you guys talk about the relationship I have with him. Gabby was a hell of a player, and we miss him in all situations. He almost helped a team (in the Columbus Blue jackets) get in (the playoffs)."

Probably would have liked Gabby a little more if he blocked a few shots for you .....or played a little defense..or back checked a little better.....or didn't turn the puck over ....or maybe got his nose dirty in the corners.......right John......

my take, and I've said this before, is that Gaby, while undoubtedly a great goal scorer, also seemed to be pouting the whole (1/2) season. And when you're as streaky as Gaborik is to begin with, that isn't a good thing.

A classy thing for Torts to say IMO.

Almost...maybe next season.

Good comments from Torts.

Let's not go that far

The key word is 'Gabby "was" a hell of a player' .... once upon a time. IMO, the CBJ would've made the playoffs without his "help." They gave up Brassard, Dorsett and d-man John Moore for him. A hell of a price to pay for 3 goals and not much more.

see the reality is, this is not really a surprise. Again, I think he is not the monster he is portrayed to be
Let's face it, the guy isn't exactly JR when it comes to the press, so for him to start this himself, and say some nice things

Aye, but it's usually lower than that! It will be interesting to see if he can hold it together if things go wrong this year. And, without a doubt I HOPE they go very wrong for the NYR in the first round.

No offense Spiny.

I am not a Torts hater, but I don't exactly love him either. His comments about Malkin/Crosby still leaves bad taste in my mouth (no comments please, spare me!). So, you will have to understand when I don't jump on the Torts love train. Call it bias.

However, there are times I appreciate his "fire." Wish Disco Dan would exhibit some of it, and bust out at some of the players like Torts does when deserved, but...

Agree with you on the 'fire'. I like it whenever I don't hear the usual 'athlete interview speak'

The medical staff will miss Gaborik.

exactly right. If i hear one more coach/player say, well, we just have to take it one game at a time...I shall surely go mad

After the team gets down a game or two that becomes "we just have to take it one period at a time". Then, when it's 3 games to none someone will say "can't think too far ahead. We're just going to take it one shift at a time". Finally it's "What time do we tee off again?"

that and;
"well, we just have to play our game"

"We have to give 110% out there"
