Big Ten wants to shake up bowl alliances

07:06 AM ET 05.02 | Sure, why wouldn't the Big Ten tinker with its bowl schedule? Why not, they're changing everything else in college football. The league will remain tied to the Rose Bowl and probably the Capital One and Outback, but beyond that it's entering its final year of current bowl ties, and commissioner Jim Delany said there likely will be changes. "It could be a lot," he said Wednesday. The Big Ten also has ties to the Gator, the Buffalo Wild Wings, the Meineke Car Care, the Heart of Dallas and Little Caesars Pizza bowls. Delany said he could have unspecified bowl deals within a few weeks and also has discussed alternating bowl ties with other conferences.

Lead off hitter! I'm faster than SEC speed.

This makes a lot of sense IMHO. Some bowls get as tired of seeing the same teams as the teams do playing in them.

Why did they use a photo of Thad Matta (the basketball coach at tOSU) when discussing football bowl tie-ins?

What's with the avi change Otis?

May 2, 2013  08:53 AM ET

How about less bowl games and expand the playoffs to 16 teams.

We already have that....it's called "SEC Regular Season"

It wasn't very long ago, the B1G was the biggest hindrance to ANY change in CFB. Now they are being described as "changing everything (else) in college football".

My, my, how things do change....

Temporary - my minor league hockey team is playing for the CHL championship.

GO ALLEN AMERICANS!!!

Not long ago the B1G was satisfied with the status quo. But with changes elsewhere, it wanted a "footprint" on the east coast (cue Maryland and Rutgers). Not satisfied with realigning other conferences, it realigned itself so that the former "leaders and best" in the legends division are now "champions of the west" in the east division.

well, I think they are reacting to the b12 changing its bowl alliances last month.

some of the bowls listed are the ones Bowlsby said talks were ongoing back then.

I don't know how the Big 10 puts up with Delany. He's screwed up every major decision possible the last few years...and this will probably be no different. My guess? He's going to try and get a lock into bowls like the Idaho Potato Bowl and give his conference a better shot at a win. He's sick of seeing the Big 10 bowl record lately.

Must be a really big shakeup. Is Thad going to coach football now?

Huh?

Isn't it Delaney that said he will drop OSU to Division II (or whatever it's called) if the courts rule players have to be paid? Now THAT will shake up the bowl picture.

May 2, 2013  01:31 PM ET

The Big 10 dropping the Rose Bowl would be a shakeup. Dropping Little Caesars Pizza Bowl wouldn't even be considered a re-arrangement of the deck chairs.

Delany is the commish of the Sarcous 14 conference, aka the B1G. His association is not with just one member school, but the conference, and by inference, all member schools.
