07:05 AM ET 05.03 | After starting the year as Milwaukee's closer, John Axford is now no longer manager Ron Roenicke's "go-to" reliever in the eighth inning, either. The Brewers' former closer had worked his way back into a setup role with a string of strong performances, but that ended Wednesday when he surrendered four eighth-inning runs to allow Pittsburgh to pull off a 6-4 victory. On Thursday, Roenicke said Jim Henderson would remain the closer but those used in front of him would vary according to the hitters coming up. "I think what we'll do instead of just figuring out where he's going to be, right now Henderson will be the closer," Roenicke said. "The other guys, we'll look at the lineups."

good. it made no sense for him to go from closer to set up man. he's still pitching in high pressure situations of close games.

at least they're not letting him cost the team nearly as many games as last year. hopefully the coaching staff realize he can't be relied on, so when he has a streak of scoreless innings in mop up duty, they don't rush to get him back into the closer or set up role.

Maybe a eye opening trip to Triple A Nashville would wake up Axford.

I'm sure he is trying his best. He's a great guy and I wish him well. Once closers lose their mental edge, they can fall completely apart.
